How to Get Home Safely When You Have Suffered an Injury Abroad

11.21.2018 by Girl on Fire // Leave a Comment

You never expect it. It could happen at any time. You’re away on a vacation, trekking along the edge of a mountain range in a group when you feel a pain in your left arm. Not sure what’s happening, you’re advised by one of the people in the group that you could be having a heart attack.

While getting you out of danger is the top priority in this situation, that’s only the initial trouble handled. When you are some distance from home, how do you get back if you require medical attention along the way?

Non-Emergency Medical Transport

The need for non-emergency medical transport (NEMT) is readily apparent in the scenario described above. Even when you’re traveling with a partner, a bunch of friends or a group, getting back home safely to seek local treatment, (or in the case of a heart attack – rehabilitation which can take months), requires arranging transport with medical help. And that’s not easy.

With better NEMT services and NEMT insurance, a nurse flies with you who is qualified and has been trained on medical options while in the air. However, not all NEMT companies employ nurses with experience of dealing with patients flying from one place to another. If they’ve worked previously as a paramedic, they may be able to provide some insight into the issues involved, but it’s not the same thing. The need for a fully trained healthcare professional to accompany you after having suffered a sudden medical emergency is clear.

The Total Service Package

It’s fair to say that not all NEMT companies offer the total service package. Some operate a strictly local country or state-based service while others only work within U.S. borders. Also, some NEMT providers travel by ground and not air.

A few NEMT businesses will make all the travel arrangements, but many will leave the harried family to hastily get things organized because this service isn’t included with their NEMT service package.

Instead, what is required is a company that makes all the arrangements. Whether you require ground transportation to the airport at either end or not, you want to make sure it is all taken care of. A good NEMT company will also take care of the flight bookings and get an agreement with the airline for a flight nurse to travel with the patient too.

At a Reasonable Cost

Compared to the cost of arranging an ambulance as medical transportation across state lines, the cost of non emergency medical transport from a service like Flying Angels is very reasonable. Traveling by road is not always desirable if the patient is in physical pain which is often the case where every pothole in the road tests your pain threshold. Going back by air is significantly faster and easier on the body at a time when it really matters.

Traveling with a nurse by your side provided by a reliable NEMT company is a weight off your mind. They use their training to ensure their patient arrives safely at home. Nothing less will do.
