Canine Genetic Testing, Wisdom Panel Event and Discounts!

12.03.2015 by Girl on Fire // 1 Comment

Do you have dogs?  Do you know what breed your dog is?  Mars Veterinary is the industry leader in canine genetic testing.

There are millions of mixed breed dogs living in homes across the U.S., they are part of our families.  If you are like me and adopt from the shelter, you really have no idea what breeds may make up your dog.

This post is brought to you by  Mars Veterinary Wisdom Panel 3.0.  All opinions are my own.

Some breeds are very similar in looks, but when it comes down to it…looks don’t tell all!  Visual identification of a dog’s breed(s) is only accurate about 25% of the time. That leaves a 75% chance for error and misidentification

Having access to reliable breed ancestry information can be helpful when making decisions about the nutrition, training and overall healthcare of these pets.  This information can also help you to figure out certain reasons behind behaviors your dog may exhibit.

Having information about the breeds that make up the family pet can help with targeted healthcare and possibly even save a life.  family member.

Mars Veterinary has expanded the breed screening coverage.  Not only that, the new MDR1 Genetic Mutation screening.

Have you heard of the MDR1?

This is called the Multi-Drug Resistance 1 and it is a genetic mutation that is found in some herding as well as some of the sighthound breeds.  It is also found in many mixed-breed dogs.

The MDR1 gene is responsible for the production of a protein called P-glycoprotein. The P-glycoprotein molecule is a drug transport pump that plays an important role in limiting drug absorption and distribution (particularly to the brain) and enhancing the excretion/elimination of many drugs used in dogs.

MDR1-mutation may cause some dogs to have severe adverse reactions to some common drugs.  For more information on breeds and drugs affected by the MDR1 mutation, visit the Wisdom Panel website.

The great thing about the Wisdom Panel® 3.0 is it covers over 250 breeds, types, and varieties.  This includes those recognized by the AKC, mixed-breed, “designer” mixes (like Labradoodles) and purebred dogs.

The ancestry information can go back all the way to the great-grandparent level, MDR1 Genetic Mutation screening results, and a predicted weight profile.  This can be so helpful!

It’s super easy to participate!  You can do it in your home.  You use two swabs and rub it between the cheek and gum of your dog.  Do this for 15 secs and you have collected your dogs DNA!

After you send it off wait for the results.  Results can take about 2-3 weeks after your test reaches the lab.

Here are some of the benefits of DNA testing your dog:

  • MDR1 mutation testing for drug sensitivity.
  • The ability to develop a training program that works with your dogs natural instincts and ability.  This can offer you a better understanding of their behavior.
  • Developing a nutrition plan for and/ maintaining a healthy weight.
  • Assists in determining what the adult size of your dog might be, which can be really important for dogs that will be trained as mobility service dogs.
  • Understanding the breeds within your dog, in order to look out for any breed-specific health concerns or common issues.

Wisdom Panel® 3.0 Canine DNA Test Kit comes with the following:

  • Instructions
  • DNA cheek swabs – all for use on one dog
  • Drying insert for swabs
  • Pre-paid return shipping box

Visit www.WisdomPanel.com for more information and to purchase a kit.

If you are in the Scottsdale, AZ area, you could attend the Holiday Pet Festival for an on-site swabbing at a discounted price of $39.99.   If you want to take home a kit and do it yourself, they can be purchased for a discounted price of $49.99 (MSRP $84.99).!

Wisdom Panel does not offer a guaranteed accuracy level, however if a good, clean sample is obtained, your dog does not share any food/toys/water with any other dogs prior to testing and doesn’t eat any food/treats—accuracy can be about 90%.

The Wisdom Panel® 3.0 kits are available now, and can be purchased online through the Wisdom Panel website.
