Family Night In: Activities for the Whole Family
As children get older, it can be difficult to maintain that family closeness that seemed so easy when they were younger. Many families find themselves only engaging one another in passing, or in the morning while preparing for work and school.
One way that families can maintain that closeness without infringing upon the individuality of the kids, as they grow and attempt to discover themselves, is to have a weekly family night in. The great thing about a family night in is that it does not have to be complicated or expensive; it is simply about finding ways to spend time together and enjoy one another’s company.
Following are some fun ideas that will, at least, get the family started in the right direction.
Have a Weekly Family Devotional
Something as simple as reading and discussing a Bible story or motivational literature can be a powerful bonding experience. The Bible has a lot of powerful stories that can serve as inspiration and motivation for everyone involved. Even for the family that is not religious, the stories can be viewed as allegories that reveal powerful principles that can be applied to life in a practical way.
Find A Favorite Card Game
The number of games that can be played with a deck of cards is almost endless. It should be easy for the family to find a card game that everyone enjoys. While poker may not be the ideal game for the entire family, there are plenty of family card games that are suitable for all ages. A good card game can literally go on for hours, increasing the “family night in” experience.
Camp Out in the Living Room
Camping out in the living room will probably not lead to anyone getting much sleep, but it is a fun way to create family memories that can be reflected upon for years to come. Pull out those sleeping bags and grab the snacks. Tell stories, sing songs, or play cards or board games until the last person passes out for the night.
If the family wants to take it to the next level, they can always take the party to the backyard. Set up a tent in the back yard that is large enough for everyone to fit in comfortably. Build a campfire, roast marshmallows, and simply enjoy the moment. Camping can be a powerful bonding experience.
Have a Movie Night
With so many good family-centered movies being released on a monthly basis, there should be no problem finding movies that everyone will enjoy. Depending on what everyone likes, chose two or three movies and watch them in succession. Of course, it would not be a movie night without the popcorn and snacks.
The truth is that it does not really matter what a family does, as long as everyone enjoys themselves, and it is done on a regular basis. The key is making the commitment to spend time together in order to maintain the closeness that has so much value.
