Family Friendly Features to Consider When Purchasing Your Next Vehicle

04.30.2013 by Girl on Fire // 4 Comments

If you’re a parent, you’re always thinking about the safety and well-being of their children. With so many risks and concerns, ensuring you have a safe vehicle is still the first one that you should cross off your list. Refer to this list of family friendly features when you go to purchase a new ride.

Rearview Cameras: Keeping An Eye Out Back

One important feature is a rearview camera, which often comes on larger vehicles such as vans, SUVs, and trucks. The camera automatically turns on when you put the car in reverse, and you can keep an eye on what is behind you. Since small items such as bikes, pets, or even children aren’t visible in the rearview mirror of taller cars, this is a necessity to keep the family (and their toys) safe from accidental harm.

Blind Spot Detection: Helping to Avoid Crashes

Another feature on newer cars is blind spot detection. If you get distracted with a crying child in the backseat, you’re often less vigilant when checking your mirrors before a lane change or turn. This feature uses sensors on both sides of the vehicle, which alert the driver if he or she is starting to swerve into occupied space.

Adaptive Cruise Control: For Long Trips

Cruise control is standard on most vehicles, but some now offer adaptive cruise control. This is very helpful, especially when taking road trips as a family. It’s easy to turn on the cruise control and relax, but it becomes dangerous if you come up fast on a slow-moving truck or other vehicle. If you aren’t keeping a close eye ahead, you might rear-end someone and cause injury to your family. Adaptive cruise control uses technology that slows your speed if you come up on a slow car.

Adaptive Headlights: Making Winding Roads Safer

When you drive at night or in a storm, headlights sometimes don’t help much on curvy roads. Adaptive headlights turn with your steering wheel, helping to light up the bends in the road that lie ahead. Additionally, you might choose the speed warning system, which accesses GPS information to warn you if your speed is too fast for upcoming curves. Ask the experts at your local dealership, such as the ones at www.hoffmannissan.com, for more information on this feature.

Tire Pressure Monitors: Preventing Blowouts

A tire blowout is a scary experience that can potentially cause serious damage to your vehicle and passengers. Some newer cars feature a tire-pressure monitor, which alerts the driver if the pressure is too low. This can help prevent a blowout, if you follow the warnings and keep your tires properly filled.

Emergency Response Systems: Offering Another Level of Safety

If you’re in an accident, your cell phone might be out of reach. A call for help is crucial in making sure your family is safe and healthy. Many auto manufacturers now offer an emergency response system. Some of these systems immediately unlock the doors and shut off the fuel supply when an airbag deploys, and put a call into an emergency response team with accident details.

When your family’s safety is in your hands, you never want to skimp on features. Many of these offer added measures that prevent accidents and injuries.

Not a safety feature like the ones you mentioned, but I strongly recommend a leather interior when you have kids! Instead of juice boxes, crumbs, etc getting mashed into upholstery, it just wipes right off of leather!

I recently bought a new vehicle, and I used this safety feature check list. I now have a good sense of confidence while driving my kids back and forth from school and sport functions! For me it really helped to make a responsible decision!

I also agree with the leather or fake leather interior! Also affordability is a big factor. I know it’s not a “safety” feature but if I save money on the car, I can afford a better car seat right? Lol
