Extreme Couponing, Just How Extreme Are You Going to Be?

07.01.2011 by Girl on Fire // 16 Comments

I am a fan of couponing and those that get amazing deals.  It’s truly a job to do it!  What I am wondering though is how extreme are you?  When does it cross over to being way too extreme?

A local couponer named Sybil Hudson took her extreme couponing so far that she ended up being arrested.  Yes, arrested for being a bit too extreme.

The 37 year old woman was arrested last Monday in Denton after a witness caught her stealing coupon inserts from other newspapers from a coin operated newspaper machine.

Hudson admits “I have done it before, I have taken newspapers when I was like moving,” .  In the news clip I watched she states that she has taken all of the newspapers from the machine before.

She was originally just ticketed for theft under $50, but then the charge was upgraded to Fraudulent Destruction or Removal or Concealment of writing for taking more than she purchased.

Apparently she thinks she did nothing wrong.  In fact watching her on the news she seemed to want to use the excuse of being a single mom just trying to make ends meet.

Theft is theft, I have been soooo mad before because my newspapers o insert.  I wonder if Sybil is to blame….Sybil, did you steal my coupons?

If I was going to steal to take care of my family…I would be sure it was something more relevant to sustaining life than a coupon insert…

Now this single mom (who should have thought about the well being of her children) is facing up to 1 year in jail and a $4,000 fine.  Was it really worth it? I’m sorry, I guess I am too honest, you reap what you sow.

I would love to hear your thoughts on this!

I was just watching the local news and they were talking about how some stores are starting to change their coupon policies because of all this craziness.

WOW, they lady ended up costing her family instead of saving!

Shame on her. Put her in jail! She gives single moms a bad name. Quit stereotyping and expecting the law doesn’t apply to you.

She pissed me off with how she was so non-chalant about it like it was soooo dumb she was in trouble. I’ve had a paper route before and if people stole all the coupon inserts I would totally have lost money because I would have had to re-buy the papers to deliver. She’s acting like the newspaper guy’s job is not important. She didn’t steal from the paper, she stole from a self-employed person. She is taking money from another family. I hope she goes down.

I saw this the other day and thought this was crazy. A good example why it isn’t worth doing it wrong.

    Thanks for sharing

This is just crazy. Maybe she convinced herself that stealing coupons wasn’t as bad as stealing actual food or other items from a store? I don’t know, just don’t get it…

This bugs me. For a couple reasons. You can’t teach your kids not to do wrong when you are doing it! My other big problem is.. I understand this couponing thing and wanting to save a buck or get stuff free.. But there are other ways! I have family that does this ‘Extreme Couponing’. Just as we as bloggers networked, my family has networked and there are local GROUPS that meet and switch coupons with each other. My cousin also posts on Facebook, EVERY SINGLE SUNDAY that if you have extra of ANY coupons to call her and she will come get them. She sometimes has FAR more then she’ll ever use.. but she doesn’t have a need for some of them, so she swaps them with her other coupon friends. There is no reason to STEAL!

WOH that’s way out there to go that far. I wouldn’t go that far, you can ask your grocery store for the extra newspapers there is no reason to steal

Holy cow! That…. yeah. If I needed to steal for my family I’d go straight for something that would help immediately!

Obviously its theft, but jail or 4K? Even at 30 days do you know what it would cost the state and incidentally the tax payers? Give her the fucking coupons.

Thing is, she admitted to stealing EVERY single paper from the newspaper machines (not just this one instance with the inserts). That is a lot of money and she admitted to it. She said this stuff to the news her self. I need to link up the news video. She’s been picking at her face, you know…like meth heads do…

It’s Texas….you don’t get away with things like that here.

Heck, they were ready to issue a warrant for me for an overdue library book (I was very sick at the end of a pregnancy, no way I was thinking about the library book). Or there is the time I almost got arrested for my purse….lol

She gives single moms a bad name. Majority of single moms work and do their very best to make ends meet. They shouldn’t be using the label “single moms” as a way to get sympathy or to avoid the law. It just perpetuates the bad stereotype in society that we already have!

This kind of stuff drives me crazy! It gives all couponers a bad name and makes it harder on us at the stores we shop at.

Easy Popeye Stuffed Pork Roast Recipe

So, I’m not a pork eater. Sure, I’ve partaken in the eating of pork in the form of that delicious morsel called bacon, but it is a rarity for me.  My family however are pork eaters to the extreme.  I try to add in recipes that are new once in awhile and this looks like […]
