Balancing Act: Earning a Living While Raising a Family

04.19.2018 by Girl on Fire // Leave a Comment

As mothers, we have it tough. Thanks to things like women’s rights movements, society is getting fairer- however, it’s still usually the case that we’re the primary caregivers to our children. This means that it’s us who are responsible for taking the time off work to have, and raise our babies. While this is, of course, a beautiful and exciting time, when it comes to our career and earning a living it can make it a little difficult. Here are some of the things you can do to balance having a job with raising children.

Consider Working Part Time

Working part time allows you to bring in some money and also keep your skills fresh in the workplace. This can make it easier to transition back into full-time work later on when your children are older- but you still get time to look after them too. Because childcare can be expensive, this is usually the best option for those who have a partner or family members to watch their kids for them while they work. If money is the main reason for returning, you need to ensure that your childcare costs don’t outweigh what you’re earning.

Find a Job With Flexible Hours

The very best way to balance work along with having children is to have a job which offers flexible hours. When you’re able to pick and choose the times you work it can take a lot of pressure off, because if you happen to be having a busy few days you can simply cut back on what you’re working. If you’re lucky enough to find a part-time position which lets you choose the hours you want to work each week, or allows you to miss time and make it up later on then this could be extremely helpful. This could mean working a mixture of mornings, afternoons, evenings and nights depending on your schedule. Women can sometimes worry working nights- even traveling to work in the dark can be an issue especially if you have to walk. However public safety is increasing thanks to things like surveillance and better policing, so the night shift isn’t something to rule out. It often pays better money too.

Work For Yourself

To truly work a job with flexible hours, why not become the boss? That way you get to decide when you work and for how long. Setting up your own business or going self employed in some capacity could allow you to do this. You could work mobile, jobs like beauticians, cleaners and photographers would work here. Depending on your skills (and whether you want to go back into education to get qualified) these could all be options. Otherwise, you have the option to work from home. Buying and selling items on sites like ebay, creating your own crafts and items to sell, starting a blog and working freelance are all ways you can earn money.
