How to dress for your office Christmas Party

12.17.2013 by Girl on Fire // 1 Comment

The festive season is fast approaching and whether you see it as a chance for much-needed social time with your colleagues or as enforced mingling with those people you work with, it’s time to think about putting together the perfect outfit to impress at your office Christmas party. Even if you aren’t a fan of mixing business with pleasure, missing the office party is one of the major mistakes that can count against your career.

Everyone loves a little added sparkle during the holiday period and it’s a great excuse to ditch your standard work wear and pull out your most glamorous look. However, since any wardrobe nightmares may be brought up every working day for the next year, it pays to remember some simple rules when dressing for the office do.

Don’t overdo the glitter

Tinsel is all well and good at Christmas but it has its place: on the Christmas tree. It’s fine to shine but keep it simple. A sequin or shimmery top will look fabulous with smart black trousers or a sleek pencil skirt, and can easily be taken straight from the office to the party if you’re going after work. If you’d rather show off your legs, put the glitter on your bottom half and work your pins in shiny leggings with killer heels, a sheer blouse and statement jewelry.

Choose festive-friendly hues

The ubiquitous little black dress is always in style and can be worn to pretty much any party, whether it’s in a wine bar, smart restaurant or trendy club. Alternatively, go for red for a more festive feel but think nice rather than novelty: there should be no Santa costumes in sight unless it’s an office-wide theme. However, the most important thing is not to bend to trends and to find a shade that works for your skin tone. Try on a few pieces and don’t settle just to look like you’re in the know. Even Coco Chanel said that ‘Fashion passes, style remains’ so follow your own tastes to look truly terrific!

maxidressThe long and short of it

When it comes to length, a shorter style shows confidence and a sense of fun that you might not get to bring out at work. Find a design that suits your shape and get ready to wow your colleagues. However, keep in mind that these can be a little risky when you’re trying to exit the taxi in a dignified manner. If you’re thinking more elegant than daring choose one of these stunning maxi dresses and wear with heels, a sleek up do and a chic bolero for a refined look – at least until the mulled wine kicks in!

How you look on the outside affects how you feel on the inside, so whether you prefer a chic dress or sharp trousers, just make sure you feel comfortable and fabulous and you’ll be all set to shine at the office Christmas party.

Wow! I love that animal print dress. My office party is here at home on Christmas morning LOL While I love that dress, I think pajamas are more appropriate attire for that party
