Oleophobic Coating? Say what?? I know, it’s a strange word. Sounds like some phobia of margarine or something right? Well, oleophobic coating is most certainly not the fear of margarine. It is actually something pretty cool if you happen to be a person that wears glasses.
It’s a new coating that is a fingerprint resistant (Oleophobic) anti-reflective coating. They say that it repels water, oil, dust and fingerprints, while still reducing reflections. This makes cleaning your lenses easier and keeps them clean longer. Sounds pretty good right?
I wear my glasses most when I am driving. Especially at night. This coating is said to really help with the glare that you sometimes experience while wearing your glasses at night.
Another big plus? It helps with photographs as well! When I photograph people with glasses I have to pay attention to the lenses to make sure that you can see the eyes. This coating makes the glasses less noticeable and less reflective! This is a huge deal! Imagine how much easier it would be to get photos of kids if there was less chance of reflection on the lenses of their glasses?
ZENNI is now offering this and you can get free shipping on orders over $50!

I tried a pair of those Zenni oleophobic lenses. After 2 months they started smearing bright lights, especially at night. I’ve always cleaned them very carefully, but these just went bad. If you reflect a bright light off the lenses you can see streaks in the coating that look like paint brush marks. I haven’t found any way to fix this (I stumbled on this website while trying to find a way to clean these lenses). I won’t be buying the oleophobic lenses again.
@Bob,
Thanks for this message. I was exactly looking for the quality and versatility of this coating. Zenni has planted such posts all over the blogophere so hard to find honest answer.
Glad that you posted here so I won’t be getting that coating.
I bought two pair of Zenni glasses a couple of years ago (2013). Same lens material, but one with hydrophobic and the other with oleophobic coating. Performance-wise, there was no difference. Both pairs are easy to clean, including fingerprints, and both repel water and dust. However, the oleophobic coating is starting to come off while the hydrophobic coating on the other pair of glasses is still like new.
