Days Out with Toddlers

09.19.2020 by Girl on Fire // Leave a Comment

Depending on the type of person or parent that you are, the thought of spending the day out and about with your toddlers may excite you or instill a sense of fear in you. While younger children need more care and attention than those with at least some grasp of personal safety, there is no reason why you cannot enjoy a fun day out together.

You will need to be the one keeping an eye out for any safety aspects, whether you are in an outdoor space or company grounds, as your child cannot be held responsible for their actions at such a young age. No matter where you go, there will always be some risk of injury, which you should be extremely cautious of. Toddlers are very curious as well as vulnerable, especially in public places. Accidents do unfortunately happen, which is why all safety measures should be taken to prevent any harm to your little ones – click the link to go to kerleyschaffer.com if you or your child is affected by a personal injury.

Read below for steps you can take to minimize the chances of issues occurring…

Look for Signs

Whether on the road or in an activity center, there are usually signs up which point out potential hazards. Warning signs may instruct you to avoid an area, wash your hands, or even show you where toilets or safe crossing locations are. Paying attention to these signs can keep you safe while out with your toddler. They are generally universal, for example, most adults across the world would recognize a sign for toilets, and usually contain images rather than walls of text. This means you can quickly find the information you want or need to see, while still giving your toddler enough attention to keep them safe.

Use a Harness

Some parents love the safety aspects of a child harness or reins. Others feel it is akin to treating your child like an animal and confining them. When out with your toddler, using a stroller may not always be a feasible option. Likewise, simply holding their hand can still come with problems, for example, if they are able to wriggle out of your hold. It is for these reasons that the harness becomes a viable and practical option. It is much better for a child to be confined close to you than to run the risk of them wandering off or getting injured.

Keep Your Eyes Open

When out with toddlers, you may not have the luxury of relaxing with a coffee or messaging on your phone. You will need to try to keep your eyes on your child at all times to keep them safe. One way of getting some ‘me time’ while out would be to choose a location with age-appropriate indoor play, with only one exit. This way, you can still be close by if your child needs you, but they won’t be able to leave the vicinity or go somewhere they shouldn’t.

A day out may take a bit more work than if you were alone or with older children, but spending time out and about with your toddler can give you both some fantastic memories that will stick with you for years to come. As they grow, you can then use these outings to start educating them with life skills such as road safety, while still having fun.
