Tips for Classy Contemporary Lighting in Your Home
When function merges with aestheticism, you know you’ve witnessed a groundbreaking design. Interior design requires an understanding of space, form and light; if any of these components are ignored, the design falls flat.
We are influenced by lighting design on a daily basis. It was interior designer Mark Hampton who said, “Real comfort, visual and physical, is vital to every room.” There are rooms we favor simply because their light and color envelop us in warmth and luxury. To create a home that celebrates life, vitality and bravura, follow these helpful lighting design tips!
Switch it Up
Our light switches are just as important as the lights they power. A light switch with its missing screw and stained plate can make even the most dazzling of interiors look grungy. Not just that, but only having the option to turn the light ‘ON’ or ‘OFF’ is pretty boring.
Today’s technology affords us the pleasure of controlling the amount of artificial light that filters through a room. With the gradual raising or lowering of a switch, we can create lighting effects dedicated to concentration, relaxation or beautification. When updating your lighting, go for the solid-state dimmer. A dimmer allows you to set the tone of a room just by rotating a dial or tapping your finger. Dimmer switches will bring you and your home into the 21st century.
Be Bold
To modernize your space, make a statement with a chandelier. Chandeliers add a touch of splendor and sophistication in the spaces they are hung; there’s a reason why European nobles adorned their galleries and banquet halls with chandeliers!
Traditionally, chandeliers are hung in the foyer, entryway or dining room. Today, interior designers are hanging these multi-armed orbs of light in the living room and bedroom spaces to create an air of romance and a splash of decadence. For a chic look, lighting company Hubbardton Forge has developed the Orb Chandelier. With six bent metal stems creating a halo of light at its center, the chandelier radiates a stunning glow of light making the bedroom at once charming and visionary.
Before selecting your chandelier, measure the size of your space and the height of your ceiling. A chandelier that is too large will overpower the space and a chandelier that is too small will look out of place. For a dynamic space, Better Homes and Gardens suggests hanging the chandelier directly above the bed, as it will bring sharper focus to your décor.
The Light Bulb
No matter how elegant our fixtures are, if the light bulb is subpar, our design space will be too. Weak wattage reminds you that you are using artificial light, and a room that feels like it has no natural light is a room that feels like a cave. If you have ever been in a lecture hall or office without any windows, then you know what artificial light can do to you; it can drive you crazy! As you go through each room determining what kind of lighting would be best suited for the space, consider the room’s general function. After determining how much or little light you need for your desired effect, look into the light bulb. There are four types of light bulbs consumers can choose from for particular lighting effects:
- LEDs: Dependent on type, can provide bright task light or soft glowing light
- Compact Florescent Bulbs (CFLs): Come in a variety of lighting tones from bright to cool
- Incandescent: Provide a warm, radiant light
- Halogen: Mimics natural light by producing a bright white light
You can light your spaces any way you like. That’s what’s so wonderful about home design, the choices are entirely up to you!
