Why Comparing Auto Insurance is (Not) a Bad Idea
Insurance is definitely one of those things that no one wants to pay for, but something we have to prepare for in a worst-case scenario. You’re probably asking yourself: “If I’m a really, really good driver, why do I need the extra protection? I’ll certainly never be the jerk who caused an accident!
Here are a few reasons why investing in an auto insurance package – while seeming like an utterly and completely ridiculous thing to do – is actually not that bad of an idea. After all, if you’re going to pay your hard-earned dollars toward an insurance package, you may as well get one that fits your needs for a price you can afford.
Comparing Auto Insurance Online Takes All of Five Minutes
How often do we really use our smart devices anyway? It’s not as though technology has made searching for car insurance easy. Is it really worth killing battery life to search for “car insurance quotes” in the google search engine and get a wealth of choices? There is such a thing as too many choices, isn’t there?
All right, so you decide to click on one of the surplus of links, but you’re in on the whole joke of it. You know that these quote comparison sites can’t possibly be able to help you. You’re a 20-something in school, you’ve learned a few things.
It feels a little fishy (right?) that all you have to do is enter your zip code, vehicle model and some other small details about yourself. That’s just a little, a little bit too easy, no? Is there some sort of catch? The service probably isn’t free. It’ll ask for your credit card number before revealing your auto insurance quotes.
Wait a minute, it is free; here are all the quotes. Nope, can’t be true, it’s a scam. The smart thing to do is just stick with what you’ve got, no questions asked, yes sir. The discounts about good grades, car storage and safety features must all be a giant conspiracy theory set up by the federal government. The same federal government that has nothing to do with car insurance laws.
Dodge Those Pesky Insurance Quotes
What’s the point of doing a car insurance comparison when you can literally just sign up with the company your mom and dad use or just stay on their policy? If it works for them, it works for you. Who really wants to get more affordable, comprehensive coverage, anyway? Won’t it just cost more than the liability coverage you have now? Well, yes and no.
Millions of people are involved in traffic collisions every year, with costs rising above $3,000 for a cosmetic fix. If you’re the one hit in an accident and the other driver is underinsured, you’re the one footing the bill. Auto liability insurance does nothing to protect its carrier if they aren’t the ones who are responsible for the crash—that’s sort of messed up.
But your parents do pay less for liability insurance, so it only makes sense that you, a young single would pay the same amount for the same package. This may not be the case. Didn’t you hear someone say once that insurance quotes vary based by age, credit history and your good grades? It’s hard to believe the $50 price cut the comparison site offers isn’t a trick. There’s no way major insurance companies offer discounts to new clients, even though it says so right there in the fine print.
Car Insurance Doesn’t Protect You
The thing is, everyone knows that when you’re in an accident no one can contest the party at fault or who’s eligible to sue whom. It’s not as though auto liability insurance covers property and bodily damages to the driver not at fault, protecting the driver who was responsible for the accident from being sued, jailed or from financial destitution.
And collision coverage, as if it could really protect you when you’re the one who caused the accident or when the underinsured guy can’t take care of the damages.
But if this is the way insurance companies really do work, then maybe it is time to switch up coverage plans and explore some options. I mean, it is the adult thing to do.
