On a rational level, you “get” that your child is now 20 and about to move out of the dorms into her first apartment. But when you look at that smart, sweet and taller-than-you young lady, you still see that darling 3-year-old who announced she wanted “Dora EVERYTHING” in her bedroom.

While it is understandably hard for you to believe that your baby is growing up and about to enjoy the “very first apartment” milestone, you can still be part of the process of getting her and her apartment ready.
With this in mind, the following items are must-haves for a first apartment.
Basic Kitchen Items
Regardless of whether your kiddo likes to cook or he would rather get by on microwaveable meals, he will still need some kitchenware items. As Moving.com notes, this includes one small pot, one large pot and one medium frying pan, along with a set of dishes, a few bowls, drinking glasses, flatware and one mug. If your young adult loves coffee, treat her to a coffee maker like a Keurig along with an assortment of K-cups. Dish towels, a couple of oven mitts and a cutting board are also basic and needed items. You don’t have to spend a ton of money for these items; you can find many of them at a secondhand store, or if you have gently used kitchen supplies that you are ready to donate, you can certainly pass them along to your kiddo.
A Security System
Having a security camera system in place at your 20-year-old’s first apartment will ease everyone’s worries when it comes to security. Even if the apartment complex is in a great neighborhood and your child is great about locking doors and windows, a security camera system will give you that invaluable peace of mind. Sit down with your young adult and and have her pick out a system that she likes; Lorex Technology, for example, sells a wide variety of security camera systems, including wire-free versions that run on long-lasting batteries and can be installed just about anywhere. As a bonus, when your child moves again, he or she can take the cameras to their new place.
Miscellaneous Necessities
There is a pretty big list of miscellaneous items that young adults need for their first apartment — the trouble is, most of them don’t realize it until they have some type of issue. As My First Apartment notes, make sure your kiddo has a basic toolbox filled with a few screwdrivers (flat and Phillips head), a hammer, pliers, wrench and a tape measure. Also, even though most smartphones include a flashlight, it’s a good idea to have good old fashioned versions on hand, along with batteries. Speaking of which, spring for a variety of batteries in all sizes, and make sure there are several boxes of standard light bulbs in the essentials box. Scotch tape, masking tape and duct tape will also come in handy, and either create your own first aid kit or purchase one for your grown up sweetie pie.
These Items Will Get Your Kiddo Off to a Great Start
Watching your child grow and become an independent young adult is very rewarding for moms. To celebrate your kiddo’s accomplishments and big move into a first apartment, help your son or daughter gather up the aforementioned items. Who knows? You might even get an invitation to help set up the new place and stay for take out pizza.
