People all over the world enjoy collectible action figures and other childhood memorabilia. Not only can the hobby give them a sense of nostalgia for their younger years, they can also stand to make a lot of money if they decide to resell them in the future.
Remember when early baseball cards were sought after in the last decade of the 20th century? The same thing can apply to the action figures of from the 1980’s, 90’s and even newer ones that are getting released every day. If things go right, you could use the memorabilia as a future source of funds. If you’re thinking about collecting toys and other childhood memorabilia, here are a few things you should know.
Collectible Action Figures
Yes, the Box is Important
If you want to have the opportunity to make money in the future from your collection, it’s best to leave your collectible action figures in the original boxes if you can.
The reason for this is because it not only keeps the memorabilia in great condition, the buyers get to see the art of the packaging, which makes the price go up. For example, there are some G.I. Joe action figures from the 1980’s that are worth almost 10 times more when they are sold with the packaging rather than loose. If your goal is to make money in the future, this is a big difference.
Even if the packaging isn’t in great shape, it’s still better to have it than not. Whenever you buy new items, try to do everything you can to get memorabilia in their original boxes and you’ll see the price of your collection grow.
But, Toys Were Designed to be Played With
If you’d like to make some money in the future, but really want to be able to interact with your toys, then you can decide to take them out of the box. This will make the final cost go down, but as long as you take care of the box as well as the memorabilia, then you may still be able to make money.
The important question is “what do you want to get out of your collection?” If you want the nostalgia of playing with an action figure or other collectible, then, by all means, play with it. Your collection should bring you happiness, no matter what your final goal is.
If it’s New, Buy Two
Chances are, if you want to start collecting and you come across some newer toys you may think will be valuable in the future, like these Pixel Pals or other toy, then why not buy two of them: one to play with and one to keep in the box?
If you get in early enough, before other collectors begin to see the value, you should be able to afford two of each toy without a problem. And if you choose correctly, you can still have fun and make some money at the same time.
Memorabilia is a lot of fun to collect, but understand what you want to get out of your collection.
