Use The Holidays To Get Closer To Your Children

02.27.2018 by Girl on Fire // Leave a Comment

When the school holidays come around, it can cause a kind of mixed feeling in a lot of parents. On the one hand, it can be great to have your children around and be able to spend more time with them again. But on the other, there are often tensions in the parent-child relationship which can become somewhat more pronounced during such a time, and which can sometimes culminate in arguments or a home atmosphere which would rather be avoided. If you instead want to try and use this time to get a little closer to your children, there are many things you can do. In this article, we are going to look at some of the approaches you can take if you want to use the holiday period to get a little closer to your children. Consider these if you are keen to do so.

Get Closer To Your Children

Take A Holiday

One of the best ways to get closer to your children is to take the family away on holiday. This can be surprisingly effective, partly because there is something about travel which encourages most people to relax and enjoy each other’s presence a little more. Of course, holidays can also be prone to arguments, so you will want to make sure that you go on a holiday which is perfectly relaxed, rather than an active adventure type holiday. As long as you do this, you will be able to use that time to really enjoy just being together – and you might be surprised at what a difference it can make for that in the long run. Consider booking a holiday to somewhere exotic if you are able to and you want to get closer to your children this year.

Get Involved In Their Interests

Do you know what your children are really into? Chances are, you have some kind of an idea, but you are also somewhat held away from some of them. This is common, and if this is the situation in your home, try not to worry too much. However, you can also work to try and get involved in these interests, and in so doing become closer to your children in a way you might not even think possible. A lot of parents find it difficult to do this, but it is actually quite straightforward. Whatever the interest might be, you just need to try and find a way to show your own interest in it. If they enjoy playing FF15, then join them in that. If they are into camping, you can go along for the ride. Either way, you will find that it makes a difference to whether or not you feel close to them, and they to you.

Go On A Road Trip

One way in which you can become closer to the whole family is to go on a road trip. Although at first glance this might not seem like the thing for you, the truth is that this can be one of the single most powerful ways to get closer to your children. Road trips can actually be a lot of fun and are a perfect way to spend the extra spare time you have in the school holidays. For a successful road trip, you will want to make sure that everyone is on board, however. It also helps to spend some time preparing for the road trip early on, so that you can be sure of having a better and more enjoyable time. You will also need to prepare for emergencies so that if anything happens you will have everything you need to survive and enjoy yourself. As long as you approach it in the right way, you will find that this is a surprisingly good way to bring your family much closer together.

Conversation

During the school terms, it can be hard to let the relationship between you and your children slip somewhat. This is sad and unfortunate, but the truth is that the school holidays offer you a chance to have conversations again, and this is an opportunity which you should make the most of. Just having a few honest and happy conversations with your children can bring you closer together again, and can help you to remember the actual relationship that the two of you have beyond the role you play as parent and child. Take whatever chance you can get during the holidays to speak with your children as much as you can, and you will find that it really does make the whole thing much easier for everyone. If at first, they are not so keen, just gently persist. You’ll find they turn around in time.

Meditate Together

These days, meditation is not the big strange secret that it used to be in our culture. More and more people are turning to meditation as a perfectly legitimate way to calm the senses, slow down the mind, and center oneself. You don’t need to believe in any particular religion or spiritual tradition in order to meditate, and yet it can bring about wonderful improvements in your life in no time. If you meditate in the presence of another, it can also have a way of bringing you closer together as you do so. The act of just sitting quietly in a room together, as simple as it is, can have a remarkable effect on the quality of any relationship, and it’s worthwhile remembering this if you want to do everything possible to get closer to your children. If you frequently meditate together, you will find that it really does make an enormous difference. It will also improve the way that you approach life in general, and so calm you in a way which will improve your relationships in other ways too.

Follow the above, and you will be able to experience a much closer relationship with your children in no time. This is a great way to make use of the holidays, and you will find that it makes a huge difference in your life too.

If You Think I am a Quitter… #CRPSSUCKS #RSDSUCKS

…well, you would most definitely be wrong. I am the opposite of a quitter.  I am a fighter.  If you see me and it looks like I have quit, I have not quit.  I have just pushed my body as far as it can go, usually pushing much farther than my body wants to allow. […]
