4 Christmas Decorating Tips for Warm Weather Climates

The carols we sing might refer to snow and ice, but many Americans aren’t living in a winter wonderland when Christmas rolls around. If you live in warmer parts of the country, forget about tradition and embrace these unique festive decorating ideas instead.

Reds and greens represent Christmas for many people, but they’re not your only option. If these hues make you think of the icy conditions you long for, then it’s time to change your color scheme. Christmas lights and other accessories are available in a range of colors these days, so think creatively and find hues that seem more suitable for your surroundings. Pink and purple tree ornaments can look very eye-catching, for example. Or rather than delicate fairy lights, you could choose bolder globes like the ones seen in tropical tiki bars.

Focus on Outdoor Areas

Living in the warmest parts of the country, you’re probably used to enjoying the festive season outdoors. While the rest of us are hibernating, you’re firing up the grill and dining al fresco. So it doesn’t make sense for you to channel your decorating energies indoors. Focus on making your home’s exterior spectacular.

Throw net lights from an online retailer like
Christmas Lights Etc over the trees in your yard to
give them some festive flair. Wrap strings of lights around your own palms, or get even glitzier with lighted palm trees. An inflatable Santa figurine and some illuminated snowflakes or reindeer can complete your outdoor display.

Embrace Artificial Trees

Of course you’ll want to decorate indoors as well. No matter where you live, a Christmas tree is the heart of any festive home. If you live in a warmer climate, you know the very real struggle of keeping a natural tree alive. Once your tree is taken out of the soil, warm weather will take its toll. By the time the season ends, your once proud pine or fir is likely to be a dried-up shadow of its former self.
Free yourself from the battle this year and invest in an artificial tree instead. Synthetic trees have come a long way in recent years and many look just as life-like as their natural counterparts. They have much more staying power in warmer climates and since they can be reused, they may even be better for the environment  if used for years to come.

Make a Christmas Wreath From Succulents

Living in warmer climates doesn’t mean all plants are off limits. Succulents thrive in these conditions, so why not use them to create a distinctive Christmas wreath?

Better Homes and Gardens explains how crafty homemakers can turn a ready-made sphagnum moss wreath into this warm weather Christmas decoration. Choose succulents that grow slowly, like sedum and mother of pearl plant. Remember to water your wreath every three to 10 weeks, depending on the weather, to keep it looking its best through the festive season.

Your Christmas decorations should reflect what Christmas means to you. Think outside the box and you can create a festive space that truly represents the way your experience the season.
