Under the Scope: Are CBD and THC Safe for Your Pets?

06.26.2020 by Girl on Fire // Leave a Comment

Just as humans do, pets experience pain, anxiety, and other ailments that can limit their quality of life. In recent years, people have found that various parts of marijuana and hemp plants provide relief for many of the problems they face. This provides them with a more natural alternative than many of the prescription medications available and without harmful side effects or risks of addiction. The thought is that if it can help people, it should be able to help pets. Unfortunately, there has not been a lot of research on the effects of these products on pets. However, there has been some preliminary information that may provide pet owners and their furry family members some comfort.

CBD for pets

Pet Treats

Many companies have been creating pet treats that contain CBD to help pets with a variety of ailments. Some preliminary studies and anecdotal evidence have shown that CBD can be very beneficial in helping pets. This has been especially beneficial for aging pets. As a pet gets older, it can be harder for them to move around as they used to. Pets can become achy or even get arthritis in their older years. Many people are starting to find that CBD can provide their pets with some comfort. There are a variety of cbd products for pets available that may be able to help with pain and discomfort. There are also products that have been shown to reduce anxiety in pets. As with any new medication or supplement, it is always a good idea to discuss this type of treatment with a veterinarian to ensure there are no concerns or interactions the pet owner should be aware of. The veterinarian may also be able to provide insight into the best types or dosages to help the particular pet.

THC for Pets

It is usually recommended that pet owners avoid giving their pet any product that contains significant amounts of THC. This is especially important for dog owners. Dogs have far more cannabinoid receptors in their brain, meaning the effects of THC can be more dramatic. THC is believed to be toxic for cats and dogs. Unfortunately, research is limited in this area so the exact amounts of THC needed to reach toxicity in pets are still unknown. However, it has been found that it can vary between pets due to their size and body chemistry. Pets who have consumed too much THC may display signs of low or elevated heart rate or blood pressure. Their breathing may slow. The pet may also become lethargic and decreases in body temperature may occur. Usually, these effects are mild and short, but they can still be dangerous and frightening for the pet.

CBD for Pets

There are many products available for pets that contain CBD with very little or no THC. These products are considered safer for pets. Research is still ongoing for these products to determine the exact benefits pets can receive. However, there are many resources, and even veterinarians that have found CBD can be beneficial in treating a variety of pet-related issues. Pets who experience extreme anxiety may find relief with CBD. Pets with pain or other age-related ailments may find comfort from using CBD products. Again, it is important to provide a pet with only the specific dosage to ensure safety. It has been noted that overconsumption of CBD products can cause issues for pets, such as urinary incontinence, ataxia, and lethargy. Most of these issues are mild and can be managed at home. However, more severe effects should be treated by a veterinarian.

If a pet owner is considering using more natural products, such as CBD, to treat their pet’s health issues or anxiety, it is always best to discuss it with the veterinarian first. They will be better equipped to provide information and assistance in finding the best product for the furry family member.
