Patience is a Virtue: How Long Does a Car Accident Case Usually Take to Settle?

01.22.2019 by Girl on Fire // Leave a Comment

After a vehicle accident, depending on what type of insurance each driver has, or doesn’t have, it may take several months to a few years to settle. Other factors include if anyone was injured in the car accident.

If anyone was injured, either driver or any of the passengers, the insurance companies and the courts will demand that all injuries are healed before proceeding with settlements. This is where most of the time is going to be spent, waiting for the injured person or persons to fully heal.

When searching for a reputable law firm to represent you in an accident case, check if the firm has been offering legal services since 1991. This would mean the company has an enormous amount of experience.

After A Car Accident

After a car accident, there is so much to do and worry about. If you were not at fault, it is best to contact a lawyer to handle everything.

Do not wait to go to the hospital or doctor if you are hurt. That should be the first step no matter who is handling your claim. Then contact a trustworthy legal team to represent you.

Start to Finish Legal Help

A law firm that specializes in auto accident cases will help you from start to finish. That means from the moment you sign with them through a trial if needed and down to the settlement. You will not have to worry about contacting the other driver or their insurance agent. You will not have to be burdened about going back to work sooner than you are able. And you won’t have to be concerned with the bills from the accident. A lawyer will take care of each of these things for you.

If you do have bills from the accident, be sure to save copies of them. You will need to turn all of them over to your attorney as soon as you receive them. Your lawyer will also contact your employer to let them know your situation and that you are currently under a doctor’s care.

What to Do if You are Harassed

If you get phone calls or notices from bill collectors, like the hospital or other places connected with the accident, refer them to your attorney. Have your lawyer’s number and email address handy to give to anyone who is requesting payment.

You will need the patience to deal with everyone who is demanding money from you. Your first order of business is to get well again if you were injured. This may take a while and an accident law firm knows how to handle your bill collectors. They want you to worry about getting better and nothing else.

If your only car was damaged in the accident, you may be able to request a rental car. You may have to pay for this up front, but you will be reimbursed after the accident case is settled. If you cannot afford a rental car, something may be worked out with the other driver’s insurance company.

Know that it takes a while to process all the paperwork with the insurance company, even if there were no injuries. Typically, within a month or so of the accident. A case with injuries could take several years, even after a person has healed. Therefore, it is important to retain an attorney to handle all the headaches.
