I’m torn, sometimes I’m like, let’s just buy a big chunk of land and build a brand new home that fits our needs. But then, I see older homes, farmhouses specifically and I want that!
I love the look of a home that has seen many days and has many stories. When you get a home like that and can remodel and update what needs to be done, it can still fit all of your needs. The difference for me? Well, I think they have more character. There are stories from that home, history, maybe even a ghost or two.
One thing I have going for me, my husband can build anything. Jeremy used to build custom homes and then went into remodeling, and now we own our own cabinet shop. He has the brain for design and all of the skills needed. He could take the most basic old house and turn it into something amazing!
Of course, there are things to consider when buying a fixer-upper, This Old House has an awesome list of pros and cons to help you make the decision. One thing that is super important that they point out is if the house needs major structural improvements, you probably should avoid that house and look for something else.
Business Insider also has a list of 8 things to consider before buying a property to renovate, according to a realtor. It’s a good read and you should definitely check that out too.
In that article, they recommend that you buy a “grandma’s house”, well what does that mean?
Imagine an older home with good bones that is only in need of cosmetic updates. It might have a Pepto-pink bathtub, but, as Hagerthey says — Grandma took care of what matters.Business Insider
That makes so much sense! I am like that about used cars too! We all know that older people usually take better care of things. They usually keep up with all maintenance and keep things super clean too!
Usually, the main things that need updating are the kitchens and bathrooms. Most people will also want to update the floors and wall treatments as well.
You can find tons of ideas online for remodeling those areas. In fact, I have a whole Pinterest board full of master bathroom remodel ideas! That is one thing I want when we buy our own home, a huge master bath.
I want a super huge and deep bathtub that my entire body can fit in under the water. I normally have freezing knees because I have to bend my legs. I’m not even that tall! In fact, I’m pretty dang short. Why do they make bathtubs so short?
I also want a separate shower that has a bench where I can sit my crippled butt down when I need to. I have so many ideas and I just want to get started. We just have to find the right place to spend the rest of our lives at. I think remodeling would be fun, stressful, yes, but still, it would be fun!
