Top Surprising Benefits of Choosing an Invisible Window Screen

05.01.2021 by Girl on Fire // Leave a Comment

A window screen is just a window screen, correct? Does it matter what it looks like as long as it keeps the bugs out? While yes, any cheap window screen will perform the basics such as keeping bugs out of your home, increase airflow and allow for ventilation—did you know they may be affecting your mental and physical health?

If you’re confused and wondering how, here are some of the top surprising benefits of choosing an invisible window screen in your home.

Let There Be Light

If you are like most people, you probably spend up to 90% of your day indoors. If it is a cold day in winter or a balmy summer afternoon, there is a chance we’ll spend even more inside. When we spend more time inside, we get less fresh air and we get less time in nature, which has been shown to have a multitude of benefits for health and wellbeing. This also means we are getting less natural sunlight in our lives.

While it is true, we need to be careful with the average time we spend in direct sunlight to reduce skin cancer, there is a large body of evidence that also shows that there are negative mental health effects when we don’t get enough. You might be asking, what does that have to do with the invisible window screen?

Invisible window screens block less natural light than other types of window screens. Not only may they help improve how you feel, but more natural lighting also means you save more energy as well as money. Natural lighting is excellent for helping to heat and brighten a space without the need to use electricity. Here are some other quick benefits of choosing an invisible window screen for more natural light:

  • More natural light during the morning and evening has been shown to help improve and increase concentration and focus.
  • More natural light can reduce blood pressure, as research has shown that sunlight changes the levels of a small messenger molecule in our bodies, nitric oxide (or, NO). NO is in our skin as well as blood, and it works to reduce blood pressure. Small amounts of NO, when exposed to natural light, are transferred from the skin to our circulation, which helps lower blood vessel tone.
  • Natural light can help improve communication between areas of the brain that are essential to our handling of emotions like stress and anxiety. Basking in natural sunlight for at least 30 minutes every morning may help reduce stress and anxiety levels.
  • Natural sunlight boosts your immune system. Scientists at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark have discovered that vitamin D is critical to T cell function, and sunlight helps create vitamin D.
  • If you plan on selling your home in the future, natural lighting is always flattering and can increase the value of your home. Natural light often makes space look larger as well as more open.

A Room with a View

Some people are willing to pay several thousand, upwards of millions of dollars to secure the ability to wake up every morning to a certain type of landscape. But why does the view outside your window matter so much?

A study in 1984, conducted by Roger Ulrich, published an article in the journal Science that found a correlation between the speed of how a patient recovered in a Pennsylvania hospital with a view of nature, compared with the recovering speed of patients who only had a view of a brick wall. Patients with an excellent view recovered faster, had fewer negative comments about their care, and needed to take less pain medication than those who only had the brick wall to look at.

Later, two psychology professors, Stephen and Rachel Kaplan would go on to pioneer the research that showed how our environments can have restorative properties. In short, when we look at nature, it helps us restock mental energy. When we have more mental energy, we feel better.

With invisible screens, the view from your favorite window or place in your home is clearer, crisper, and far less obstructed compared to the view when using ordinary window screens. With clearer views, as a homeowner, you can allow yourself to enjoy the green landscape or urban architecture which is pleasing to the eye which further allows your mind to drift, relax, and give you a much-needed mental break. Now you know about the top surprising benefits of choosing invisible screens, make sure to upgrade your home’s beautiful views today!
