Setting Up a Basic Home DIY Toolbox

Emergency Repairs and Quick Fixes: Setting Up a Basic Home DIY Toolbox

DIY is not only a great way to save money on repairs and quick fixes. It’s also a lot of fun! But if you like the idea of fixing things in your home by yourself without having to call out a specialist, you will need to make sure you have the right tools.

Here’s a guide to the essentials you’ll need in your basic DIY toolbox in order to carry out most types of minor jobs in your home.

Basic Home DIY Toolbox

Power Drill

The power drill is one of the most important items in any home toolbox. If you want to put up any shelves, hooks, or anything else that hangs on the wall, a power drill will be essential. It can also be used as a screwdriver.

Choose a drill with a hammer setting that can drill through brick. A drill that plugs into the power supply will usually be the most powerful, but a cordless drill is more convenient. Why not get both?

Spirit Level

If you’re planning on putting up any shelves, a spirit level is a must-have tool. These come in a wide range of sizes and prices, but you don’t need a particularly large one. Just make sure you get a high-quality one, like all the tools in your kit.

Adjustable Wrench

Another essential, the adjustable wrench can be used for a huge variety of jobs around the home. One wrench can carry out most jobs so you often will only need one rather than a set, but it depends on the types of DIY jobs you have in mind.

You might also want to invest in some torque wrenches, so check out a site like RS Components for info on these and other tools.

Hammers

A large and small hammer will be essential. Plenty of jobs involve hammering nails into the wall or floor, or pulling them out again, and a couple of good hammers will get a lot of use.

Set of Screwdrivers

Get yourself a set of screwdrivers, including both flathead and Phillips-style screwdrivers in a range of sizes. With a good set, you’ll be able to do most jobs.

You might also want to get a new precision screwdriver here. In addition, you may also consider getting an adjustable torque screwdriver and a micro screwdriver set for smaller screws, which are often essential for electrical DIY jobs

Nails, Screws, etc

You’ll want to have a good supply of screws, nails, bolts, wall plugs, and all the other little bits that you’ll need for most jobs. You can build up your collection over time, and consider investing in an organizer to keep them all separate.

Safety Goggles

Whenever you’re carrying out jobs that involve drilling, hammering, or sawing, make sure you wear safety goggles. Even a tiny speck of brick can cause serious damage to your eyes, so invest in a strong pair of safety goggles and stay safe. Read more about DIY safety here.

Swiss Army Knife

An all-in-one Swiss army knife is a great little tool to have on you. Small enough to keep on you at all times, it comes with a lot of the basic tools that you need for minor jobs. While it’s no substitute for a proper toolbox, it’s certainly something you’ll want to have around.

Build Up Your Toolbox

These are a few of the most important items for your home DIY toolbox. A good way to get started is to invest in a basic toolbox that has most of the essentials, and from there you can add to it over the months and years until you have a large collection of tools that will help you complete any DIY task.
