5 Ways You Might Be Attracting Roaches to Your Home Without Knowing

02.04.2022 by Girl on Fire // Leave a Comment

People often live under the assumption that cockroaches are attracted to filth. Sadly, they learn this isn’t the case when they find they are dealing with an invasion of these pests. Cockroaches will take up residence anywhere they can find shelter, food, and water. When they do, they encourage their friends to join them. Unfortunately, these critters are resilient and persistent, which means they are difficult to get rid of once they find a home.

Individuals must take quick action if they find they have a roach problem, as these pests spread bacteria and diseases readily. Immediately call for pest control in Arlington, Virginia at the first sign of a cockroach to protect your health and prevent an infestation of these vermin. Once they are gone, take steps to ensure they don’t return.

Remove Dirty Dishes from the Sink

People often put dishes in the sink and say they will deal with them the next day. Doing so invites cockroaches into the home, as the odors and food particles present on these dishes draw them in. In addition, they will drink whatever is left in a person’s glass or cup. When they have identified a food source, they return to it again and again. For this reason, always wash dirty dishes and clean the sink to remove any lingering odors or food debris.

Close Trash Cans and Trash Bags

Most people assume they can leave a trash can or bag open if it doesn’t have food in it. However, cockroaches feast on a variety of things other than food and will frequently find these items in trash cans and bags. This includes things such as hair, paper, and glue, which are items commonly found in trash cans across America. Every person should invest in a trash can with a lid or empty their garbage containers as quickly as possible so they don’t unintentionally attract these pests. However, that may not be enough.

Wipe down the exterior of the trash can weekly. People often spill waste on the outside of the can without realizing they have done so. By cleaning the exterior and interior of the can weekly with a cleaning solution and a scrubbing tool, they remove these spills and debris. Do the same with outdoor trash cans because they could also draw these pests.

Humidity

Any excess moisture in a home attracts pests, as they view the moisture as a water source. This helps to explain why homeowners often see cockroaches in their bathrooms, laundry rooms, or kitchens. Any leak in the home or spill in the kitchen needs to be addressed immediately to prevent an infestation. In addition, homeowners should never allow condensation to build up under the air conditioning unit, as cockroaches will gather to drink the water.

Food Crumbs

Immediately sweep up any food crumbs and never leave food containers open. Vacuum at least twice a week to remove any food particles that are hidden in carpet fibers and clean between the furniture for the same reason. A cockroach can find the smallest of crumbs and feast on them. Always clean up after pets when they are done eating, and never leave their food bowls out. In addition, clean food crumbs from stovetops, toasters, and ovens. Deep clean your appliances and sweep behind, under, and around large appliances to catch any crumbs that may otherwise be missed.

Cockroaches are like any warm and humid place. They tend to be most active during the summer months for this reason. When the weather turns cold, they often look for a new home inside your house. Don’t let this happen. Fix any cracks or crevices where they may enter, and make the home uninhabitable for them. When you do so, you’ll find they become less of a concern. If you do happen to see one or more roaches, contact a pest control specialist right away. The sooner you address the problem, the easier it will be to eradicate the pests.
