Feeling a little cramped on space at home? Well, let’s take a look at Accessory Dwelling Units (ADU) and see if they can help you with that problem!
Are you starting to get a little cramped on space at home? Maybe the kids need more play space or granny decided she wants to move in perhaps! It’s important to have enough living space and not be on top of one another because that’s a sure way to lose your mind! Granny needs her own space if she moves in because we all know she’s not down to share a bedroom!

So what exactly is an Accessory Dwelling Unit or ADU? An ADU is a secondary housing unit that is added to a single-family lot. This can be an addition to add for just you and your family, or it could be a small apartment that you rent out for profit.
They’re kind of like studio apartments honestly. There are three different types of ADU’s; Interior, exterior and detached. Interior could be turning an unused basement into a living space, attached is an addition to the layout you already have and a detached would be along the lines of a mother-in-law suite.
Obviously, it’s going to be easier to do an interior ADU unit than it would be to go through the process of building, zoning, and cost of an exterior or detached. But I have always wanted a little detached miniature house just for watching movies or doing crafts! Then I can make a mess and not have to worry about my whole house being a mess LOL!
You can even hire people to help you add adu units to an apartment building you rent out and help increase your profit! They can help you maximize the space you have and turn space-wasting areas into more units that you can profit off of. Maybe you’re not wanting more apartment units added, but you want to add a gym or a computer room. They can help you with that as well and I’m pretty sure your tenants would think you’re the coolest landlord ever!

There are so many ways to add more living space to your home or an apartment building! All it takes is a little creativity and some good contractors. I can’t see it being that hard to turn a basement or garage into an apartment-type unit. I’ve seen ones that are like their own little house, seriously! I saw one basement that had 3 bedrooms, an office, full kitchen, game room, two bathrooms and a living room! Granted this was the basement of a very large mansion, but it was still massive!
I am seriously wanting to add a little house in my backyard now y’all! Something with a nice skylight and some french doors… I want to hear the rain on the roof while I watch movies and sip on some yummy coffee! Somewhere that not a single toy is present! I mean… I love you son, but you have taken over our house completely!
