Protect Your Family: What Questions Should You Ask When You’ve Been in an Accident?

09.29.2017 by Girl on Fire // Leave a Comment

Accidents are unfortunate, but they happen all the time. Chances are great that, at some point in your life, you will be involved in an auto accident. If it does happen, there will be a great deal of chaos and confusion and you might suffer an injury in addition to damage to your car. It’s important to know what questions to ask after you get involved in an accident. Here are some of the crucial questions to ask.

What Do I Do After an Accident?

The first thing you must always do after an accident is to stop. Check on your passengers if you have any and make sure they are safe. Next, get out of the car and speak with the other driver involved. You should always exchange information with that person, including their name, phone number, address, date of birth, email address, driver’s license number and insurance information. If the person driving the vehicle is not the owner of the vehicle, you will need the owner’s information as well.

it’s smart to keep a notepad handy in your glove compartment just in case of an accident. You may also want to take note of the time and date the accident took place, as well as weather conditions. Take pictures of the scene of the accident and the damage by using your cell phone’s camera so that you have visual documentation.

Who Should I Contact?

After a car accident, your first priority should be your well-being and that of any passengers in the vehicle with you. You should immediately call 911 to request police come to the scene. When you call 911, you can also have an ambulance arrive if anyone is hurt. You should also contact the people closest to you to let them know you have been in an accident and inform them of your condition.

When the police arrive at the scene, give them a report of the accident and all of the information of the other individuals involved. Afterward, you should also call your insurance company and let an agent know that you have been in an accident. The sooner you do this, the more likely you are to be able to make a claim for damages. The agent will inform you of the forms you will need to file a claim and give you any other pertinent information.

Finally, you should contact your attorney to learn about what steps you should take next. You can also decide whether to file a claim against the other driver.

What Should I Ask My Attorney?

After an accident, you will have a number of concerns that your personal attorney can answer. Generally, there are six key questions you should ask your lawyer when you meet with him or her. Those include:

  • What kind of compensation can I expect?
  • Can you help me get social security benefits?
  • How will you represent me?
  • When do I have to take care of claims?
  • What can I do about compensation for future medical expenses?
  • What do you need from me?

What Should I Ask My Insurance Company?

The insurance company needs your full account of the accident. Bring along any documentation you have made, as well as photos you took of the scene following the accident. Information like the date, time, weather conditions and damages must be reported to your insurance company so that it can come up with an estimate for any repairs you might need on your car. Additionally, if your vehicle was totaled, you will want to ask what the company will pay.

If you have been injured in a car accident, time is of the essence to secure legal representation. To get the compensation you truly deserve, schedule a consultation with a personal injury attorney.
