5 Winter Getaway Ideas in Colorado

02.22.2013 by Girl on Fire // Leave a Comment

Colorado is one of the most popular winter destinations in the United States. During the coldest months of the year, this state comes to life with cool refreshing air, fluffy white snow, and a full slate of exciting activities for families, groups of friends, and couples to enjoy.

1. Hit the Slopes with Iconic Skiing and Snowboarding Adventures

Home to over two dozen skiing and snowboarding resorts, Colorado makes the ideal getaway for snow-surfing warriors. These resorts pack tons of amenities on top of acres of pearly white terrain that forms some of the most breathtaking backdrops you’ve ever laid eyes on. Whether it’s tackling one of the expert-level slopes or riding a lift line to take in the lush scenery of aspen and evergreen trees from above, the world-class resorts in Colorado equal a one-of-kind experience.

2. Run and Gun with the Nuggets

When it comes to activities in the city of Denver, a Nuggets NBA game is consistently one of the hottest tickets in town. Denver Nuggets tickets provide access to one of the league’s most exciting brands of basketball, in addition to delicious food and electric half-time shows that often feature family-friendly contests, musical acts, and pulse-pounding performances by the team dancers. Win or lose, sports fanatics exit the Pepsi Center feeling thoroughly entertained.

3. Move Your Feet to the Tune of Ice Skating

Golden Gate Canyon, Yampa River, and Eleven Mile are a few of several Colorado State Parks that offer natural ponds primed for ice skating. You may find that the scenery at the parks is just as stunning as the landscapes on the resorts, as many feature majestic mountain views accentuated by the brilliant sun soaking through crisp, clear skies during the day. Colorado also has a network of indoor rinks for those who find the brisk breeze frothing up from the park ponds a bit too chilly.

4. Soar Along the River with Fly Fishing

The winter season is one of most rewarding times of year for die-hard fly anglers. Few are able to brave the frigid temperatures, so having the entire river to yourself isn’t out of the realm of possibility. From the crystal blue waters of the Arkansas River to the relaxing setting of the tailwater fishery around Cheeseman Canyon, rainbow trout, Colorado brown, and other prized catches await.

5. Scale the Frosty Mountains

Seasoned climbers the world over visit Colorado during the winter to partake in the thrilling challenge that is ice climbing. The unofficial ice climbing capital of the world, Ouray is a popular spot for this activity as it houses Ouray Ice Park. This is a man-made venue equipped with more than 200 climbing structures. If you happen to be in town in January, check out the annual Ouray Ice Festival to indulge in the culture of this adventurous pastime.

A true winter wonderland, Colorado is stocked with enough activities to make sure you keep busy throughout your trip. After a few fun-filled days in the Rocky Mountain state, you’ll understand why the locals anxiously await the end of fall each year.
