5 Ideas to Liven Up Mealtime

05.03.2018 by Girl on Fire // Leave a Comment

Although it is a real pleasure to create a home cooked meal for the family, often the ideas dry up and every meal time can feel the same. Kids have their favorites, and it can be hard to satisfy everyone all the time. So feeding a standard meat and two veg can become the norm, closely followed by a dessert of cake and custard or ice cream. It is time to look into some new and interesting ideas for dinner, so that when the kids say “What’s for Dinner Mom?” Then they are excited by the new meal that is going to be offered. Here are some interesting ideas that will put a smile on the kid’s faces during mealtime.

Fun New Ideas

As a mom, we all know that kids can be fussy eaters. They often seem to define themselves by the foods they don’t like. A great plan is to check out Pinterest for new ideas. There are so many options that can be selected.  A simple search for Kids Meal Ideas comes up with 1001 different ideas.

Substitute items in a Recipe

Substitute your kid’s least favorite foodstuff with another item. For example, if one child doesn’t like mushrooms, then either leave them out of the recipe or add in something that they do like, perhaps tomatoes or peppers.

Rather than making lots of different meals, stage the cooking process. For larger families, the ingredients that are not tolerated by younger kids can be left until last. So say you have a young child who does not tolerate spicy food, instead create the recipe without the spices, then dish out a bowl for the younger child before everyone else, and add the spices at the end.

Mix it up

Always create new and interesting foods that will stimulate the kids’ minds and taste buds.  A great idea is to mix it up and find out How To Make A Pizza Casserole or try a crazy ice cream flavor like Vietnamese Coffee with Frosted Almonds and Peanut Butter.

Taste bud Tour

Why not try eating food from a specific country in the world one day of the week? Perhaps every Wednesday could be “Taste bud Tour” night. Decide a week in advance what cuisine you are going to explore. To teach the kids about geography at the same time, get a globe or map of the world out at the end of the meal and discuss the origin of the food that was enjoyed. Then go on to plan out what country will be explored by our taste buds next week.

Involve the Kids

Allow the kids to help out with the food. They often enjoy the food much better when they have cooked it themselves. Take time to check out food online and decide what meals you will make together. This can be a wonderful family activity that is bonding and fun. To help younger kids out with their writing and spelling, it can be a great idea to ask them to help with the shopping list. It is time to make mealtimes fun and exciting!
