5 Hobbies that Cost Less Than $50 to Pick Up

11.22.2017 by Girl on Fire // Leave a Comment

Hobbies are only fun when they’re not using up all of your hard-earned paychecks. It can be tempting to throw down hundreds of dollars when taking up a new interest, but there are so many options out there that won’t break the bank.

When choosing a new hobby, consider activities that you already know that you enjoy. If you love looking at old ephemera and vintage books, maybe papermaking is the way to go. If there is nowhere you’d rather be than out in the fresh air, a hobby that requires you to stay inside probably won’t be the best fit. Think about what you would really enjoy and pursue a hobby in that field.

Pallet Art

Hobbies

Many businesses are overrun with wood pallets and are happy to give them away for free or for a small cost. A pallet in good condition will have several salvageable boards that can be made into amazing art pieces.

Pallet boards can become stained or painted pieces of wall art that are customization for any location or occasion. All you’ll need are some basic hand tools, sandpaper, and stain or paint of your choice. This can be a very low-cost hobby.

Digital Scrapbooking

Now that most of us store our photos digitally, it just makes sense to scrapbook them using a digital scrapbooking software program. There are free programs out there or ones that can be purchased for a small cost. Scrapbooking digitally eliminates the costs associated with traditional paper scrapbooking: paper, books, adhesives, and embellishments.

Lock Picking

Lockpicking is a rewarding hobby that involves skill, determination and puzzle solving. All you need to get started is a quality beginner lock pick set which you could easily purchase online. This hobby could even lead to a locksmith career!

Bird Watching

Pick up an inexpensive pair of binoculars, check out some birding books from the library and hit the trails! Check online for local birding spots. Much can be learned about bird watching online for free.

Create Jewelry from Found Objects

Found objects such as lockets, small padlocks and other metal pieces can be turned into gorgeous jewelry. Vintage and contemporary pieces can be found online, at thrift stores and garage sales.

Stamp Collecting

A basic stamp collection can be purchased from another collector for a small cost to get you started. Checkbooks about stamp collecting out from the library and you’ll be on your way with this satisfying hobby. Stamp collecting does not need to cost much; join trade groups online to bulk up your collection at a very small cost to you.

Finding a hobby that you truly enjoy is a great way to escape from the daily grind and de-stress. Since the options listed above all have a low financial investment required, there’s no harm in trying them all and seeing which one resonates with you most. The important idea to keep in mind is to keep your hobby in line with your financial goals and have fun doing it.
