When we have babies, we concentrate on getting the nursery ready and keeping our children safe. However, as they get older there is more to think about. Many choose to have areas of their home separate for their children, safe spaces for the kids to play and grow. Others, however, choose to give their children free reign in the home, reasoning that it’s their children’s home as much as theirs. For help with decorating or design find a tradesmen who can make sure everything is done to a high, safe standard, but if you want your home to be completely child-friendly, here are 10 tips to help you get there.
Lighting
To make your home as child-friendly as possible steer clear of dark atmospheric lighting. Keep your rooms as bright as possible. You should also add night lights and reading lamps to their personal areas.
Floors
Very young children who are just learning to walk and find their balance often find wooden flooring difficult to master. For a truly child-friendly home opt for soft carpets or rugs instead.
Let Them Help
One of the best ways to make your home child-friendly is to let them help to make it their own. Ask for their help choosing color schemes and decorations and encourage them to create some artwork for the walls. To make them feel extra special, frame their work and hang it in an obvious place.
Safety
Safety must be the most important thing in any family home. Go around your whole house on your hands and knees. See what you can reach and what needs to be made safe. What can you pull off? What can you bang your head against? Check everything and then get moving things, strapping shelves to walls and installing safety gates.
Walls
Chalkboard walls are a great option and relatively easy to create. Let the kids have fun without worrying about them ruining your nicely painted walls.
Colors
Go for bright welcoming colors, especially in family areas such as the lounge and dining room. Try to avoid gender stereotypes and try a bit of everything. If you want to keep things stylish, keep the walls neutral and accessorize with color.
Have Toy Stations
Keep toys everywhere so your children always have access to something they enjoy. Keep a small toy box full of some of their favorites in every room they spend time in instead of restricting them to one area.
Include Reading Areas
Surrounding your children with books is a great way to give them a head start. Have a corner full of cushions, soft furnishings, and books in a few rooms so your children can get comfy with a book whenever they want.
Think About Cleanliness
Try to make things easier for yourself. Raising children is messy so consider dark carpets and easy to clean sofas. Leather is a great option, as is covering your sofa with a throw or slip.
Be Silly
Have lots of fun. Get some silly cushions or inflatables. Let your children help you choose and incorporate their personalities into your décor as much as your own.
Remember children grow quickly and their tastes change with the seasons. So, try to keep the basic décor simple.
