Online Education Options for the iGeneration

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

iGeneration, I’ve never used that term before, but it is totally fitting!  The iGeneration being the generation that my children are growing up with.  They have never known life without internet and wireless life!  More and more educators are taking notice of the learning opportunities that this can provide.

I was asked by MomSelect to check out Onlineschoolsolutions.com, an online learning site.  We ourselves have used an online school before.  The one we used was not a good fit for us, so I was curious to check out this one.

I was able to watch a session of students with a teacher and was pretty impressed.  It was fun!  The teacher was hilarious and I would have loved to have had a teacher like that when I was in school.  You can watch the session by clicking here, you will have to allow the download to view.

After watching the session I watched an overview of the curriculum used.  This was different than we had used with the online school we chose.   I learned that they use a curriculum called Aventa and that over 1,000 schools use this curriculum to extend core, elective and foreign language courses.  They also are using it to provide advanced placement AP exam review and provide credit recovery.  The curriculum looked to be more interactive and interesting than what I have seen before.  You can view the overview yourself by clicking here and then select media-rich curriculum.

I still don’t think online education is right for us, but it is right for many parents!  Those that want to homeschool but are not quite sure where to start, those that want the structure of a regular school as well as those that move a lot for their job such as military.  I am so happy that online schools are available as an option.

From the home-schooled family, the student brushing up on skills to compete at the next level or the child facing challenges in traditional schools such as bullying, KCDL provides academic solutions to fit your child’s needs. We welcome you to look through the website at www.onlineschoolsolutions.com, and then click on your state to find the KCDL online school serving your area.

I will receive a $20 Target gift card for my time to review www.onlineschoolsolutions.com.  All opinions are 100% my own.

Zhu Zhu Pets, Have you Heard of These Critters?

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

003Not too long ago I was chosen to have a Zhu Zhu pets party.  The kids had a blast and I was able to send each kid home with their own Zhu Zhu pet.  I told all the kids that attended how they were some of the first to play with and own a Zhu Zhu pet! I told them how they could tell all their friends about them and be in on the beginning of a new trend.  I mean, I totally knew these things would be a hit, but I didn’t imagine how huge it would be!

So, back to my original Question….Have you heard of these critters? If not, you must be living under a rock somewhere.  They are selling out everywhere!  Luckily my girls each have one and have a whole set of accessories to play with.

006I do not do indoor pets! Well, we have hermit crabs, but it’s like they are not even here.  These little hamsters are awesome!  The kids have so much fun with them and they make the cutest little noises!  I love watching the Zhu Zhu pets zoom around the kitchen!

007I do have one warning, Zhu Zhu pets like to hide in the hair of curly haired little girls. Don’t ask me how she ended up with a hamster in her hair, but it happened and there were tears.  So tell your children, no hamsters in the hair!! Or maybe these things just happen at my home!

Maria Bailey & Mom Select sent 11 hamsters and a complete habitrail for me to host a party with.  No monetary compensation was received and all opinions are my own.

Moms, y’all know that you say things like, “in just a minute”, “later”, “I’m busy right now” or “maybe tomorrow”.  I know I am guilty of it.  The time flies by and before you know it, it’s bedtime and you blew your kid off.  There is always something that needs to be done.  Well you know what?  IT can be done later.  Set it aside and spend an extra hour with your kids.  This is so very important.  They grow so quickly.  Soon it will hit you and you will wonder…when did this happen?  When did my baby turn into a kid?

logoSaveTheChildrenSave the Children created the CHANGE program (Creating Healthy, Active, and Nurturing Growing-up Environments) to promote healthier lifestyles for children living in poverty by providing nutritious snacks and regular opportunities for children to be physically active.

Pledge today!  It’s easy!

I was informed of this promotion by Mom Select.  I do have an ongoing relationship with Mom Select  and Frigidaire.

ThomasWhat an awesome year it has been!  Thanks to Mom Select, the girls and I are going to See Thomas & Friends Live! On Stage: A Circus Comes To Town.

We will be attending the show in June at the Nokia Theater in Grand Prairie, Texas. I’ve never been to the Nokia before…heck before this year I hadn’t really been anywhere in Texas.  Slowly I am getting used to my surroundings and venturing out of my safe little home.

Thomas Fun FactFun Fact

Thomas is based on the London Brighton and South Coast Railway 0-6-0 E2 with extended side tanks.

You can check the event schedule to find out when Thomas & Friends will be coming to your town!

Visiting the site I found a lot of great activities for the little ones.  I already told them about the show, and they are anxious for that time to come.  Thomas LiveMaybe I should have waited til the show time was close to tell them, but it’s hard for me to keep secrets from them!  Thankfully, with the activities on the site I can keep them occupied with Thomas ’til show time!

I will be sure to post about the show after we go and share any pictures we take.  In the meantime, head over and see when the show is coming to your town!

Your kids will be thrilled to see one of their favorite characters come to life!

Let Your Kids Test an Online Educational Game!

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

MomSelect is looking for moms and kids to test out an awesome online experience for kids.  If you take part in this program, your kids will be given free access to a new kids’ website, not yet available to the public.  This online game is focused on the animal kingdom.  It is not only entertaining but teaches positive lessons about nature and cooperation.

Moms will feel comfortable with the safe and secure nature of the online world and the educational aspect of the activities, while kids will love rescuing and caring for the baby animals they encounter during their gameplay.

If you think your child would be interested in being part of the first group of kids to experience this exciting website, they will send you a unique access code.  The code will be valid during the entire site sneak peek testing period (approximately 4 weeks) and your child will be given special benefits and access within the site.

After testing out the site, all they ask is that you fill out a brief online survey with your thoughts regarding the site.  Your feedback, along with the thoughts of your Kiddos, will directly impact the final product launch.  As a thank you for your insights, they will be holding a drawing among survey respondents – 3 lucky moms and their kids will each win a $50 Target gift card!

By participating in the sneak peek testing program all they ask is that you:

  • Visit the site with your child to get a sense of the website
  • Encourage your child to play as much as possible during the sneak peek testing period
  • Fill out the online survey within the requested time period*

To be eligible for this program, you must have at least one child in the 7-12 age range and live in or near one of the following geographic locations:
