My family had never had Melba toast until recently.  We were asked to try out some Old London Melba Toast in two different varieties.  We had Sea Salt and Spicy 3 Pepper.  When I tried them I was expecting a strong flavor, but it was all very light.  I loved how crunchy they are.  My daughter Lauren especially loved them.  The Spicy 3 Pepper is not what you would think.  It’s not a “hot” spicy flavor.  It’s just enough to have a little zing to it.  The Sea Salt was definitely my favorite of the two.

They have some recipes of things you could make with them.  We haven’t made it yet, but we plan on making the Chocolate Pistachio Crunch.  This recipe is very easy and only has three ingredients!

  • toast4 cups (2-12-oz. pkg.) of semi sweet chocolate dark chips (not milk chocolate)
  • 1 box Melba Snacks Sea Salt
  • 1 cup of pistachios, chopped and toasted

Pick up some next time you do your grocery shopping and try some of the easy recipes they have on the website.  They also make a great healthy crunchy snack on their own!  Or try them with your favorite cheese spread or Hummus!

nav_danceI also wanted to tell you about the Dance Your Way to Hollywood Sweepstakes.

RosaritaYUM!  I love Salsa!  I use it on many things, but the old stand by snack of chips and salsa is my favorite!  Recently I was able to try 3 new salsas from Rosarita.  The Mild Salsa Mexicana had just the right amount of kick to be flavorful and was still mild enough for my kids to enjoy it as well.

We tend to have friends over every weekend and use chips and salsa a lot as a snack for guests.  I had this out at our last get together and everyone asked what kind it was.  There is also a Hot Salsa Taquera that was delicious mixed up as a dip with cheese.  The other one that I was able to try was the Medium Salsa Verde, this is the green salsa and I used it in a mexican style chicken dish.  Excellent!

You can find this new salsa in only 4 cities.  Those cities are: LA, Dallas, Phoenix, and Denver.  You’ll be able to find them at select Walmart and grocery stores.  I hope you are lucky enough to live in one of these cities so you can give it a try.  Even luckier if you live in Dallas cause everyone knows….Texas is best!

Photography has always been a love of mine. Until recently I only really shot my 35mm Minolta.  I love taking photos and I longed for a digital SLR so I could see them instantly and get them up on display right away.  About a month ago I was able to add a digital SLR to my equipment.  I’ve never taken a photography class besides a semester in High-school.  I’ve shot weddings, portraits and tons of kids pageant portfolios.  I love to take photos of kids.  I don’t pose them.  I just let them be themselves and capture every amazing natural detail of them.  I love pouty face photos.  Life isn’t all about smiles you know. Photo’s should capture real life.  This is my opinion anyhow and I have a high admiration of my opinion…

I would love to take some classes and learn the tricks of the trade.  Things that I do not know about the DSLR.  Tricks to achieve things that I haven’t figured out would be awesome.  Everyone needs a hobby or 2…or in my case an unlimited amount.  Photography can be enjoyed by anyone.  Morgan has won first place medals for some of her photos.  I bought her a digital camera for Christmas, so I expect to see her skill grow even more.

Capturing a persons emotion on film is so amazing…even if it is fake, like Emma pictured above.  She isn’t sad, or in turmoil.  She is just an excellent actress and makes for a fun photography subject.  This is her Kurt Cobain look.  I think she pulls off the tortured soul look quite well.headerimage

Recently I found out about a program called SOAR!. I wanted to enter badly, but the timing with the Holidays prevented me from getting it submitted in time.  SOAR! is a new scholarship that is going to help three women take their dream of building a photography business come true. How rad is that?  I would love to have that opportunity. Maybe next year?

The winners will be announced on January 1st.  The Women that win will receive camera gear from Sony, websites and blogs from SmugMug, designed by Chopping Block.  They will also receive software from Adobe, ShootQ, and SHOWIT that will make their life easier.  The recipients will be mentored by industry leaders as well as Me Ra Koh’s business coaches from Wisdom Connection. How awesome for those that do win this Scholarship!

Me Ra Koh is on a mission to help women fulfill their photography dreams. She had a dream of helping and was able (with help from her mentors and friends) to pull it off.  This is how SOAR! began.   Even those of us that are not in the running to win can still benefit from those that do win.  The winners will be required to document their year long journey on the SOAR! website through blog posts, videos, images, teleconferences and more.  So we can follow along and maybe learn along with them.

This giveaway has ended.  The winners were comments 182 and 210 42!

A lot of people will have extra mouths to feed throughout the Holidays.  Family traveling, friends, etc.  How do you work those extra mouths into your budget and menu?  How about Walmart’s Christmas Dinner for Eight for as low as $30?  Or what about the the New Year’s Eve meal for 10 under $40?

With Walmart, it is possible to pull off a huge meal on a budget.  Food Network’s Aaron Sanchez has some great recipes posted on the Walmart Holiday Meals Website.  Feeding 8 people on $30 is less than $4 per person!  I think that can fit into any holiday budget!DinnerComplete

Walmart’s $30 Christmas feast for eight starts with these family-favorite ingredients:

  • One 10-pound spiral cut half-ham
  • Three 8-ounce cans Del Monte Green Beans
  • One 10-pound bag of Russet potatoes
  • One 12-count package of Sara Lee dinner rolls
  • One 10 inch Pumpkin Pie

NewYears

Chef Aarón created a party-ready fiesta spread for 10 for as low as $40. It includes:

  • Shrimp Tray (5 servings)
  • Vegetable Tray (10 servings)
  • Hillshire Farms Little Smokies (8 servings)
  • Pillsbury Crescent Rolls (6 servings)
  • Land O’Lakes Egg Nog (8 servings)
  • Red Velvet cake

I wouldn’t be able to use the New Years menu listed above because of the Shrimp, but I know most people are a huge fan and love it.  I’m sure it would be a hit at a party.

So what do you think…is the price right on the menus?  I try to make the most food I can with spending the least amount possible.  Stretching food is a skill I have.  One of my favorites for Holidays is homemade mashed potatoes.  My secret ingredient for making them spectacular….add cream cheese!  Yum!

I have 2 $30 Walmart gift cards to giveaway to 2 lucky readers!

Are you pregnant?  Maybe a mom to a newborn?  Or on your way to being pregnant?  There are lots of questions about infant nutrition that you need answers to.  How much does your baby need to eat?  What is best?  Breastmilk?  Formula?  Cereal?  Baby food?  So many things to think about and you get a bit overwhelmed.

The Infant Nutrition Center website has a ton of great information for moms and mothers to be.  They have links to great info and articles such as the special food pyramid for pregnancy and breastfeeding.logo

I especially love the video section that is accessible from the front page.  They have great visuals that show how proper nutrition shapes development.  The videos also cover how individual nutrients affect the senses, bone formation, and the immune system of infants.  One video had an awesome 3-D image of a baby being born.

At the Infant Nutrition Center you can learn about the latest research findings through video, pictures, and graphics.  You can view a webcast about the new site by clicking  here.

One of my biggest issues with diet is that I never get enough protein.  I don’t eat enough meat and I try really hard to up my protein with other things.  I always fall way short of the guideline that are set for me on healthy eating in that area.  I was really excited when I received 2 new items from Atkins!

  • Penne Pasta
  • All Purpose Baking Mix

Ok, now I know you’re wondering why that would be so exciting…well these products from Atkins are jam packed with protein and are things I like!

When you think of Pasta and Baking Mix I am sure you do not think of those as high protein food items.  Well, these are!  They are also packed with fiber, are low in sugar, and, of course, fit perfectly into a low-carb lifestyle! I mean really…Pasta as part of a healthy diet food?  Pancakes?  Uh, awesome!

Atkins also has cool recipes to use with the new products such as Penne with Fresh Tomatoes, Lemon and Feta or Rich Chocolate Brownies.  The best part?  No reason to feel guilty!

To celebrate the launch of these new products, Atkins has announced an online recipe contest where you can share your own recipe featuring the All Purpose Baking Mix or Penne Pasta and win great prizes. Recipes can be submitted to www.atkins.com by September 30, 2009

You can find out more about these products on the Atkins Site.  Did you know that the Atkins plan and all the tools you need are free for you to use?  I didn’t until now!  I will definitely be trying out more of the recipes and checking out the program as well!  I have seen so many people achieve awesome results with this plan.

I talk about my brain not functioning as well as it should.  I often blame it on motherhood.  I have been told that playing games that challenge quick thinking helps exercise your brain and that in turn helps with memory and function.  I don’t want to be a brain dead mom.  I want to be a quick thinking mom that can take on anything.

The same thing can happen to kids.  You have to feed and exercise those brains or they get lazyBrainFuel 4 Kids is an awesome website with all sorts of great tips for us to help grow the brains of our children.  There are tips on healthy eating, brain exercising, facts, a forum and much much more!

I especially loved the article called “Can Proper Nutrition Improve School Performance?“.  I think a lot of people do not realize the effects of what kids eat!  It can damage concentration, contribute to bad behavior as well as draining health and energy. On the site you will find many informational articles written by experts.

In the forums you can even ask questions to a Registered Dietitian!  I think that is pretty great.  It is free to join the forums so be sure to go check it out.  You will surely find a lot of useful info!  This site is a great educational resource for parents and kids!

lumosity_app_logoI also signed up to exercise my own brain at Lumosity. It was fun and obviously my brain needs some training in a serious way!  I thought I was pretty awesome, but it turns out I need a lot of work these days to get my brain in shape.  I knew my memory was lacking, but dang…I am not such a quick thinker.  Yea. I admitted it.  I am lacking and I’ll be working at it!

Trying to find healthy fast options is quite a chore.  I think the majority of us are becoming more health conscious, which brings us more challenges for getting a quick healthy meal on the table on those rushed days.

Healthy ChoiceConAgra Foods’ Healthy Choice® is doing just what the name says and giving us healthier choices!  We need healthier portion controlled meals to improve the American diet.  America is a very unhealthy fat country. Healthy dietary changes can contribute to weight loss, as well as lower cholesterol and blood pressure numbers.

Healthy Choice is the only brand in the frozen food entree category that can call itself “healthy” as described by the FDA.

Thanks to Mom Central I was able to attend a conference call with  Dr. Rippe of Rippe Health.  Dr. Rippe was discussing his findings on a healthy study he conducted including Healthy Choice products.

rliWe know that healthier eating and being physically active are key to maintaining a healthy lifestyle, but when pressed for time, it’s a challenge to achieve and maintain such a lifestyle,” said study author Dr. Rippe. “These findings are important because they show in a long-term study that Healthy Choice products offer the convenience and nutrition people are seeking to help them reach their goals.

Upon concluding his 6 month study with overweight men and women, his findings showed that those who followed a plan centered on eating Healthy Choice products every day and also starting a simple walking program were reported to have had significant positive changes occur. The group lost an average of 18 lbs and 3 inches off their waistline in just 24 weeks.

natural_logoLooking over the Healthy Choice website I was impressed with the new products they offer called the All Natural Entrees.  These  new dishes feature four vegetarian options and include ingredients such as 100% extra virgin olive oil, fontina cheese, and nine-grain penne.  Man that sounds……

Awesome!

Head on over and see what new Healthy Choices you can make for a better, healthier life!

What?  KaBoom!? You want to know what that is don’t ya?  Well, I guess I might just want to tell you!

I’m willing to bet that you have children, children that want to play.  There are not that many great playgrounds around anymore and not too many new ones being built.

School….well schools don’t even really even give your kids recess anymore.  It certainly isn’t like it was when I was a kid.

Physical activity? What the heck is that….’ol Johnny much rather play his video games and watch TV.  That is a sad, sad thing.  His mom don’t want him to go outside because its not safe…and besides that, the local playground is boring and decrepit.

Emma ParkMy family spends a lot of time at the local parks.  We are lucky and have some really awesome ones around here.  I know that a lot of people are not so lucky and KaBoom! can help!

Playspaces are where kids learn to run, jump and swing. But they also learn how to negotiate and to respect one another. How to think and plan without an adult telling them what to do. Kids who play also play better as adults, since they build character as well as muscle on the playground.

kaboom!KaBOOM! is a national non-profit dedicated to bringing play back into the lives of our children. KaBoom! facilitates building innovative, kid-inspired playspaces, using a community-build model which improves the well-being of the children they serve as well as the communities in which they live.

The KaBoom! Theory of Change

If you can picture it, you can believe it. If you can believe it, you can build it. The KaBOOM! Theory of Change is built upon the belief that the process of organizing a community-build playspace is as important as the product: the playspace itself. There are three pillars that support our Theory of Change:

  • Collective Cause: Like teammates on a sport team striving to win a game, a diverse group of volunteers use their different skills to collaborate and achieve the straightforward and simple goal of building a playspace in one day for the universal cause of children’s well-being.
  • Achievable Wins: Community development research has shown that an important step in community empowerment is to achieve a small, probable “win.” A community group that has successfully built a new playground or skatepark is more likely to believe they can individually and collectively make a difference. And they are more likely to act on future community needs.
  • Cascading Steps of Courage: Small steps of courage lead to greater acts of courage. Researchers have explored what has caused people to take significant courageous actions to benefit others, and one of the leading factors for such acts was the presence of small, civically minded steps early on in life, which helped shape personal values and, over time, progressed to greater civically-minded acts.

By signing up with KaBoom! you can help make a difference.   You can submit playspaces that you know of so that others can find them as well.  You can search for playspaces that you may not know about too!  You can become a community partner and help build new playspaces by volunteering and fundraising. There is a task for everyone no matter how big or how small.

I hope you’ll come join KaBoom! with Mom Central and I!  I have already added some playgrounds on there.  julianneh_100px

KaBoom! is also trying to get 100,000 Playspaces in 100 Days! We need your help to reach that goal!  If you choose a cause (mine is National Wildlife Federation) then Julianne Hough, two-time winner of Dancing with the Stars, and Mercury Nashville recording artist will donate $1 to your cause — and you’ll be entered to win great prizes, including a trip for four to meet Julianne!

Thank you goes out to Mom Central for letting me know about this great site so that I could share it with you all!  I’m telling you…again….those ladies ROCK!

I love Italian food, the family loves Italian food too.  It’s one of those make everyone happy things!

Pasta is cheap…add a good sauce and you are rockin’ & rollin’There are so many things you can do with a good sauce.  You can make spaghetti, lasagna, a pasta bake, pizza….the list goes on and on.  It’s alllll good!

sweet

Ragu has just introduced two new flavors of the Old World Style sauces!

  • Sweet Tomato Basil, a smooth blend of Tomato and Basil
  • Margherita, a delicious mix of Tomatoes, Pizza Seasoning and Mozzarella Cheese

Thanks to Mom Central and Ragu I was able to givmarghe both new flavors a try!

The Ragu website is loaded with recipes to use with the new flavors so not only did I get to try a new flavor, I also got to test out a new recipe on the family….double score!

Up Side Down Deep DishFor the Sweet Tomato Basil sauce we had the Up Side Down Deep Dish Pizza!  The recipe calls for Spinach or Broccoli and we chose the spinach only for this dish.  This recipe was definitely a winner in my home.  Everyone thought it was delish!  I’m using the image from the website because I spent a few days with out batteries…YIKES!  Isn’t it so yummy looking?  Oh yea….definitely making this again!  I think next time I will use my own recipe and make the pizza dough instead of using frozen.  That way I can flavor the crust up like we normally do.

PastaFor the Margherita I chose to make the Pasta Margherita.  This is a very simple recipe that is sure to be a hit in other homes as it was in mine.  If your kids love Pizza they will surely love this pasta dish.  Cheap, Quick, Easy and Tastes good…all the important features of a good meal!  I’m sure there are many add ins you could do on this and make it to suit your family.  I’m thinking Olives next time????? Oh and yea…I stole the pic here too!  Hey, I have batteries now…but that food is long gone!

Over all…I have to say this sauce was great.  I liked both flavors a lot and so did the family.  I think if I had to choose a favorite I would have to choose the Margherita.  Mmmmmmm…………………………………

For you moms with picky eaters…did you know there is more than a full serving of veggies in every 1/2 cup of sauce??  Sauce those kids up mama!

You can find the recipes I used plus a ton more on the Ragu Website.  The next recipe I try is going to be the Slow Cooker Spinach Lasagna.
