Ruby100lbsI just finished watching the first season of Ruby on DVD.  Ruby is a woman that lives in Savannah, Georgia and has struggled with her weight since she was a child. She is now morbidly obese. Today, she weighs over 400 pounds and quite honestly, it’s killing her.

Ruby was Recently diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. The doctor flat out told her that she has to lose the weight if she wants to live. The show chronicles what may be her last chance to take off hundreds of pounds in an attempt to save her own life.

Ruby is a very pretty woman with an awesome personality. It’s easy to like her and to want to watch her succeed.

My New Healthy Lifesaver

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

Ok, I’m going to tell you what has been my lifesaver lately.  I’m a smoothie freak, but I burn through blenders like mad!  I’m on the lookout for a blender that can match my smoothie wrath.  So far…the blender always loses.

So, here I am blenderless and trying so, so hard not to get a Starbucks or a Bahama Bucks.

I need a dang smoothie!

Being an on the go mom it can be hard to get in a good meal.  I’m really trying to be healthier and going to the gym. I need something fast that I can take with me.  I recently got a chance to try out Mix1 and that totally filled my smoothie void!

mix1limeMix1 has two products.  The original product is an enhanced protein shake. It has 15 grams of whey protein isolate, 23 vitamins and minerals and the antioxidant equivalent of 3 servings of fruits and vegetables! The newest product is a hi-antioxidant fiber drink.  It has the antioxidant equivalent of 9 servings of fruits and vegetables, 9 grams of whey protein isolate, and 8 grams of soluble fiber.

Why are antioxidants important?

Antioxidants absorb free radicals in the human body. Free radicals can break down healthy cells and potentially lead to a variety of health problems, sickness and disease. It is important to get antioxidants in order to neutralize cell-damaging free radicals.

The enhanced protein shake is a great workout shake. It provides up to 4 hours of balanced energy! The hi-antioxidant shake is best consumed with a meal or as a snack.

The taste and flavor variety are unbelievable!

Enhanced Protein shake

  • Blueberry-Vanilla
  • Lime (My favorite)
  • Mango
  • Mixberry
  • Tangerine

Hi-antioxidant fiber drink

  • Dark-Berry
  • Orange-Carrot

These drinks are thick! It is truly like drinking a smoothie! They really make you feel like you are having some sweet treat, not something good for you.  But, they are good for you! Perfect for someone like me that just needs a little bad goodness, without really being bad!  I am not ever hungry in the mornings but I know I need to have something to make my metabolism work right.  These are perfect for me to drink and give me a good burst of energy that I need to get going in the morning.

I also do not consume enough protein in my diet which is very important for my health and weight loss.  By drinking Mix1 I am getting a very good source of protein.

The Benefits of protein:

  • builds & repairs muscle and encourages bone growth
  • supports healthy metabolism & fat loss
  • provides a source of energy
  • supports healthy & stable blood sugar levels

I had the kids taste test these too and they were a huge hit! I love them, the kids love them.  I would say we will definitely add these to the shopping list!

The MSRP is $2.29 for the enhanced protein shake and $2.69 for the hi-antioxidant fiber drink.  So much cheaper than getting a smoothie at Bahama Bucks and the Mix1 drink is good for me!

Mix1 is sold nationally at Kroger and Whole Foods Market; regionally at King Soopers, Albertsons, Fred Meyer, Costco, Jewel-osco, Ralphs, HEB, City Market and QFC; as well as at independent grocery retailers across the United States.

About Those Health Changes…

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

So today was the day…weigh in and measurements at Curves.  Well, it’s that time of the month for me, so she said she would weigh me next week.  Anyhow, she went ahead and measured me and I am going to share the changes so far with you.

Now keep in mind, I have only went 10 times.  I planned to go at least 5 times a week…well this horrid pain and some other stress crap messed me up.  But now, no more excuses.  I feel better after I go anyhow!  After dreamstimefree_2060244working out I am in way less pain.

Here are the results of my first check after 10 workouts:

  • Bust: No Change…those girls are not gonna budge.
  • Waist:  3/4 inch lost
  • Abdomen: 1 inch lost
  • His: 1/4 inch lost
  • Thighs 1/2 inch lost each leg = 1 inch lost!
  • Arms: No change
  • Body Fat lost was 2lbs
  • Weight lost, not sure.  I will know next week after Aunt Flo has went home.

I know it doesn’t seem like a lot, but after only 10 work outs seeing a change is a big boostWho knows, my measurements may be different next week as well.  I am always puffy during my period.

I really enjoy going to Curves.  The owner Marnee is super nice and helpful.  She is more than willing to give advice or a push!

Changes and Accountability

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

I’m making changes.  I’ve been stuck in this rut for too long now.  I thought for sure after Emma quit nursing last year that I would just start dropping the weight like before.  I budged a little and then got stuck.

My eating habits are really good.  I eat a lot of vegetables and I try to have a lot of foods raw.  I go for walks and try to stay active with the kids…so what the heck is wrong??

I was talking to a friend and she made me realize part of the problem.  I am drinking my calories! I do good on the eating part, but I am blowing the limits with the things I am drinking.  I really had no idea, but now I do and it’s changing.

livestrongI started using the Daily Plate at Livestrong.com.  They have a free version and I like it a lot better than the other online food trackers.  This one has a ton of items already in the database.  When you choose a food that you ate that day it gives you an alternative.  It will tell you what you could have had instead and how many calories you would have saved.

Holy cow that will open your eyes!  Check out the drink I normally order at Starbucks:

Java Chip Frappuccino Blended, with Whipped Cream.

Serving Size: 1 Venti

  • Calories: 650
  • Total Fat: 25g
  • Carbs: 99g
  • Protein: 10g

650 calories….seriously??? So Daily Plate opened my eyes to this and now I know that I can go to Starbucks and get something much better for me such as:

Iced Venti Skinny Mocha

Serving Size: 1 Venti

  • Calories: 110
  • Total Fat: 0g
  • Carbs: 17g
  • Protein: 10g

logoThis is what I have going on…
I’m tracking my foods….everything! I am trying to up my protein, this is an area I am lacking a lot in.  For 2 weeks I am on a max of 1200 calories to get things started.  I also joined Curves and will be going 6 days a week, 30 min a day.  So wish me luck!  I have a goal and I plan on reaching it by September, hopefully sooner though!

Healthy Choice…A Healthier Lifestyle

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

Trying to find healthy fast options is quite a chore.  I think the majority of us are becoming more health conscious, which brings us more challenges for getting a quick healthy meal on the table on those rushed days.

Healthy ChoiceConAgra Foods’ Healthy Choice® is doing just what the name says and giving us healthier choices!  We need healthier portion controlled meals to improve the American diet.  America is a very unhealthy fat country. Healthy dietary changes can contribute to weight loss, as well as lower cholesterol and blood pressure numbers.

Healthy Choice is the only brand in the frozen food entree category that can call itself “healthy” as described by the FDA.

Thanks to Mom Central I was able to attend a conference call with  Dr. Rippe of Rippe Health.  Dr. Rippe was discussing his findings on a healthy study he conducted including Healthy Choice products.

rliWe know that healthier eating and being physically active are key to maintaining a healthy lifestyle, but when pressed for time, it’s a challenge to achieve and maintain such a lifestyle,” said study author Dr. Rippe. “These findings are important because they show in a long-term study that Healthy Choice products offer the convenience and nutrition people are seeking to help them reach their goals.

Upon concluding his 6 month study with overweight men and women, his findings showed that those who followed a plan centered on eating Healthy Choice products every day and also starting a simple walking program were reported to have had significant positive changes occur. The group lost an average of 18 lbs and 3 inches off their waistline in just 24 weeks.

natural_logoLooking over the Healthy Choice website I was impressed with the new products they offer called the All Natural Entrees.  These  new dishes feature four vegetarian options and include ingredients such as 100% extra virgin olive oil, fontina cheese, and nine-grain penne.  Man that sounds……

Awesome!

Head on over and see what new Healthy Choices you can make for a better, healthier life!
