Archive for Denton County 4H

morgans_hairYou all know that we are active in Denton County 4H.  After many recent trips to our local park at the lake, Morgan has decided she wants to make a differenceArrowhead Park at Lake Lewisville in Hickory Creek is TRASHED.  She wants to change this.  She already sent an email out to the Mayor of Hickory Creek.

She could really use your support and we could really use some company sponsors on this.  She sent an email to GLAD today to see about sponsorship with them in providing garbage bags.  We also need sponsors to provide food, snacks and drinks! Sponsors to provide work gloves, since it is littered with trash and glass!  Rubber gloves will not cut it.  We are also looking for a sponsor to provide a digital camera and or video camera to document the project!

She will be doing this as a leadership project as well as community service.  We will be setting up her website over the next week, where she will be posting about the goals and progress of this project.  I’m super proud of her for taking on such a huge project! If you are local and want to be involved please let us know!  If you want to donate anything to help, such as goods or money just let us know!

Thanks so much for any support you can give her on this huge project!

jacketI am so proud of the accomplishments Morgan made this past 4H year! It was her first year and she jumped into pretty much everything.  She tried to get involved with every project to the best of her ability.

4HawardsShe won medals, ribbons and her District Jacket! She learned about Food and Nurtrition, Public Speaking and Education Presentations, Photography, Clowning and Entomology…just to name a few things!

We are excited to be coming into our second year of 4H! What better way to jump back into things than a Parade!  Morgan and the rest of the Denton County 4H clowns participated in the parade this past weekend.  They even took first place for best youth float!

Thursday we attended a 4H party!  It was so hot, but a great time!  I just had sweat pouring down me, ew.  They had goats, chickens, horses and even a go cart to ride!

Emma chickened out when it came time to ride the horse, but Lauren atleast got on the horse for a photo!  Morgan rode the horse without telling me so no picture of that!  She loves horses and will be taking a class starting next week at this same location that is all about horses!

Hope you enjoy the photos!

dscf4119Today Morgan and I volunteered at the Denton Community Food Center.  We had a great time and plan on going back whenever we can get away without the little ones.  The people there are so super nice!

The food center is located at: 109 W. Sycamore in Denton, TX.  They provide staple food supplies to families/individuals that are in an emergency situation.  The food center accepts donations of food and money.

Volunteers are always needed on a regular basis.  They are open Monday-Friday from 1-3 p.m.

Some of the volunteer tasks include:

  • screening families
  • filling orders
  • maintaining supplies
  • stocking shelves
  • keeping the food center in order. dscf4118

It’s nice to give back! Get in there and volunteer!  This will count towards her 4H community service and be added to the memory book we are working on now.

4HToday we are headed out to the District 4H competitions.  If you have been reading our posts about 4H you may have read about the County competitions.  Morgan did so well, especially with it being her first year!

Today she will be doing her Education Presentation again for which she won 1st place at County!  The Clowning skit she participated in for Share the Fun has also moved on to district, so we she will be doing that again today as well.

It’s going to be a long exciting day!  Wish her luck on her District entries!  This is very important to her and she is super excited.  She is in there fixing her “Alice” hair now.

Last Thursday they took the clowning troupe to a Mother’s Day out program at a local church.  I will be posting about that in another post so you can see what these kids do in the community.

Oh and tomorrow is Miss. Emma’s 3rd birthdayWow…time sure does fly! I can’t believe she is 3 tomorrow!

4H

WOW…what a loooooooooong day! The competitions for 4H County Roundup started last night.  This is our 1st year in 4H and we were not quite sure what to expect.  Morgan gave an Educational Presentation  last night titled “Price vs. Quality”. She was really nervous, but did very well for her first time.

This morning she was up at 5am getting ready to go and preparing her entry for Main Dish in the Food and Nutrition competition.  She decided on a Tofu Stir Fry served over Rice to present to the judges.  She also entered 3 photos in the photography competition.  She entered Black and White Animal, Color Animal and Color Natural Landscape.  She also participated in our 4H groups clowning skit for Share The Fun.

When awards time came we were pretty nervous and excited. Again, being 1st year we had no idea what to expect.  Morgan’s projects placed in the following:

  • Education Presentation: 1st place Medal
  • Color Animal Photography: 1st place Medal
  • Share the Fun: 1st place Medal
  • Black and White Animal Photography: 2nd place ribbon
  • Color Natural Landscape Photography: 2nd place ribbon
  • Main Dish Food and Nutrition: 4th place ribbon

How awesome to win in each thing you enter!  This was a huge boost in her confidence, and just what she needed!  All of the kids were so happy to be getting ribbons and medals! I really can not stress enough how much we love this program!  Seriously, read my other 4H post…it is so much more than we thought it was.  Let’s not forget how awesome 4H participation looks on a college application!

4HI had always thought that 4H was just about raising Rabbits, Chickens, Pigs, etc etc…  I had no idea how much more 4H really offered until we joined last year. While the animal part is still very appealing to us, we are not in a situation to participate in that part of 4H at this time.  The future though…who knows?

I can’t even begin to tell you how awesome 4H has been as part of our education.  Entomology, Photography, Food and Nutrition, Community Service, Public Speaking, Leadership, Clowning…. and the list goes on and on!

Currently we are preparing for the County competitions.  This is our first time and while it is overwhelming, it is very fun!  Morgan chose to enter more than one competition.  Her choices were Education Presentation, Food and Nutrition, Photography, as well as participating in a Clowning Skit for Share the Fun.

She has learned so much at the classes and has made a lot of wonderful friends.  Even the little ones get to participate in a program called Clover Buds.  I have to say, I have met some of the most awesome parents and people during this short time!

I can not wait until next session to see what is planned!  I’m so glad to have found a program that is so interested in our children and the adults that they will grow up to be. Did I mention that 4H is free?  You only buy supplies when you need them, which really has not been all that much.  It is a great supplement to your child’s education.

I wish I had been in 4H as a child.  If you were in 4H I would love to hear about your experiences!  Did it help you with college?  Your career?  Tell us all about it!
