In today’s world when the pressure on the environment is bigger than it ever has been in the past, being kind to the planet on which you live is more important than ever. So passing on good environmentally friendly habits to your kids is something that you should be looking to do at the earliest possible opportunity. It goes without saying that children are our future so you really do need to teach them well. Here are five ways that you can teach your kids to look after the environment.
Lead by Example
Teaching your kids to get into good habits always starts with leading by example. You are probably well aware that your kids mimic your actions, so if they see you care about the amount of energy you are using around the home, they are more likely to care themselves. So, for example, when you finish watching TV, you should always remember to turn it off straight away and teach your kids to do the same. Small things like this really all add up in the long-run.
Make it Fun
Being kinder to the environment doesn’t have to be a chore. Instead, it is something that you should be looking to make fun for the whole family. For example, you could encourage wildlife into your garden by building a bird feeder and planting more trees and bushes. When you spot certain species, you could learn about their different names. You can then explain to your kids that looking after the environment is so important in allowing these species to live and flourish.
Get Your Kids to Help You
There are plenty of environmentally friendly activities around the home that you could get your kids to help out with. For example, when you are out in the garden, there are plenty of activities that they can do under your supervision. You could start your own vegetable garden together. It is a very satisfying experience to watch these grow over time and they taste all the better in the knowledge that you have grown them yourself!
Explain Why the Environment is Important
One way that you can teach your kids about the importance of the environment is by reading them stories that reinforce this message. Kids tend to be very influenced by the stories that they read when they are young. Another way to teach them is by explaining with real life examples, such as when you drive past wind farms or solar powered homes. Things tend to be much easier to talk about when you have visual examples to use.
Volunteer as a Family
If you know of any community-led environmental schemes going on in the local area, you could volunteer as a family. There is a definite sense of pride and achievement that comes from helping your neighborhood to look great which you can share together. This also has the extra benefit of helping to teach your kids about the value of hard work.
