Save a Struggling Marriage
It’s not uncommon for married couples to drift apart and encounter issues as time goes on. When you were first married, you probably never imagined that you’d one day be facing these problems. However, having children, financial worries, job stress, and everything else that life throws at you can quickly come between two individuals who once promised to love and be committed to each other forever. But, unless there’s something seriously wrong such as abuse or deceit, the good news is that many struggling marriages can be saved with the right strategies and approach. Check out these 3 Ways to Save a Struggling Marriage.
Tip #1. See a Therapist:
Many people struggle to book an appointment with a therapist since they think that it means admitting failure, or they don’t quite feel ready to open up to a total stranger about their problems. However, oftentimes in a marriage, only a completely impartial stranger can really help; turning to your friends and family is great during times of hardship, but the advice that they give is always going to be more biased. Seeing a counselor as a couple should never be viewed as a failure; in fact, it’s a great sign that the two of you are committed and strong enough to do whatever it takes to put your relationship back on track. Tip #2. Show Gratitude:
One of the biggest problems that causes marriage breakdowns is when one or both partners starts taking the other for granted. If you feel that your partner is taking you for granted more than usual these days, then take a look at yourself – maybe you are also doing the same with them. Remember how you were when you both first started dating, how you’d say thank you for every little thing that they did for you? To help save your marriage, practice gratitude – not just for your partner, but also for yourself, since this will make you a lot happier and satisfied in your relationship and remind you to appreciate what you have.
Tip #3. Improve Communication:
Another massive issue that comes up between struggling married couples is a lack of communication. Once upon a time, you would talk to each other about everything, but today, it seems like a massive struggle to even get your partner to tell you how their day has been. After a while, failing to communicate with one another can bring about a huge set of problems, especially if there are things that have been bothering you that you haven’t brought up, which will simply get bigger the longer you try and ignore them.
Sit down with your partner, and a therapist if needed, and try to facilitate an open and honest conversation about both of your needs and wishes. This will help you to put together a plan for the future regarding the changes that you’re going to make and the compromises you need for both of you to be happy once again.
