Make Your Partner’s Birthday Perfect
It can often be hard to figure out how exactly to make your partner’s birthday special, so here are some tips to help you out!
Particularly if it’s a big birthday, you might be trying to figure out what exactly you should buy for him. If it is a special birthday, consider making a bigger gesture, like buying him a watch and getting it engraved with some words that have a deep meaning to both of you. But otherwise, it’s a good idea to focus on his interests and figure out what exactly he’d want from there – don’t give him what you wish he had! You might hate his fashion sense, but buying him a whole new set of shirts might not be the most fun experience for him. If you want to make his look more fresh and modern, try going for accessories and jewelry, like bracelets and earrings – buying earrings for men can be a little stressful if you aren’t sure what they might like, but look at what he already has and look through online stores carefully to make a decision.
Consider his hobbies carefully – if he loves Star Wars then why not buy him a collectible figure? You could get him a signed copy of his favorite book, a new jacket to replace the one he doesn’t like anymore, or tickets to see his favorite band or team. Think about what he loves, and any gift ideas will be sure to come to you naturally. Remember that purchasing an experience for him might be a better option than a physical gift – research has shown that people regret splashing their cash on experiences much less than they do on possessions, so getting him a morning driving his favourite supercar or maybe going parachuting or bungee jumping together might be a better idea than going for the same gifts that you do every year.
A lot of the time, food can really make a birthday even more special. If the pair of you are foodies and you love trying out new restaurants, an ideal gift is to take him out to one of the hottest restaurants around and splash out on a tasting menu – you could even follow it up with a night in a hotel so that you can digest the food gently and have a little time together. Even if you aren’t really a couple who are into food, it’s a great idea to go out for dinner together – you could even gather together a group of friends so that you can all sit around a table at a restaurant together and eat your favourite foods and celebrate your partner together – and remember that that’s the kind of celebration that you won’t have to clean up after!
If you want to cook for your partner at home, remember that it’s a good idea to pick something that looks and tastes good but that won’t require too much time and effort. After all, you don’t want to spend the entirety of his birthday sweating over a hot stove – it’s more important for the pair of you to spend time together. Rather, it’s a good idea to make as much as you can before the time that you’re going to spend together so that you can heat the rest of the food up with minimal fuss – for instance, you could make a lasagna so that you only have to put it in the oven to bake it when the two of you are together.
If your partner loves to be the center of attention then there’s nothing better than a party to celebrate him – you could even go the whole hog and throw him a surprise party, complete with leading him into a dark house and being surprised by his friends and family jumping out from behind your furniture. Because let’s face it, everyone deserves a surprise party at some point in their lives! However, it’s important to remember that it might not be everyone’s idea of a good time, so if he doesn’t particularly like surprises, warn him that something’s going to be happening so that he can prepare himself beforehand.
Remember that the key to a great party is simplicity – you want good music, space so people can mingle with each other, and food that can be eaten while walking around (like burgers, paper cones of fries, pizza and so on) unless you’re planning on having a sit down dinner – in which case, as before, you should make sure that it isn’t too complicated a menu so you can maximise the time you spend with your guests. Dim the lights, buy plenty of beer, make sure that Livin’ On A Prayer and Don’t Stop Believin’ are on your playlist, and enlist friends to help you light the candles and bring in the birthday cake, and you’ll be set.
Finally, remember that the best possible gift you can give your partner is to spend time together. Time is one of our most valuable commodities in this increasingly busy world, so make sure you put down your phone and tablet and take yourself off Twitter for the night so that you can fully focus on spending time together, whether you want to have dinner at home or have a full night out together with your friends.
One of the best ways to celebrate your partner is to plan a special evening together, so think carefully about what he likes – maybe his favorite band is coming to town, or he wants to see a Shakespeare play. Even if it isn’t your thing, make sure that you’re fully enthusiastic about it – it’s his night, not yours, after all (although you may have to draw the line at something you truly dislike and let him go to the game with his buddies). Finally, what about taking him away for the weekend? Pick a town a couple of hours away from where you live that neither of you has been to before, book an Airbnb, and get exploring.
