My First Black Friday, You May be Offended…

Yesterday I decided I would brave my first Black Friday.  I was scared, I asked people to pray about me going and to definitely pray…more specifically to pray for the safety of others (others meaning all the rest of you that were out there, especially the stupid).

Morgan and I decided to do this together, hitting Walmart first around 10pm.  There were a ton of people, but it really wasn’t so bad.  I grabbed the things I needed and then we headed to the front to wait for the 12:01 check out.  I was to the registers so early that I ended up being the third person in line and was home by 12:30am.

Not too bad, I feel sorry for those suckers that waited til 12 am to even start walking to the front, I waved bye to their not so happy asses.

So we headed home, unloaded and checked some times for the stores that would be opening next.  The next store set to open was Target at 4 am.  We agreed that this would indeed be our next location.  Ha…We got to Target and seen all these freaks lined up with tents all the way down the front of the store, through the parking lot and the way across the front of Home Depot.  WHAT? Please tell me what y’all were waiting for that was so awesome that hours in 32 degree weather was worth it?  I must know.  I was mentally figuring out my pay rate per hour, the add on rate for frost bite and then my other rate for acting like a dumbass.  It didn’t add up to be worth anything that was sold in Target.  Hell, all I wanted was a $5 Hello Kitty Nightgown, $2 Greatest American Hero and Punky Brewster DVDs.  We left the Target parking lot in disbelief.

We had some time to kill until Radio Shack opened at 5:30am.  We headed over to the Children’s Place.  We quickly headed back out.  30% off isn’t much of a discount.  When I think of Black Friday, I expected a little more than that.  We hit Old Navy, again nothing that was worth being there for.

Then I was challenged.

Challenged!

This is where the prayers must have helped a few poor souls.  This is when I seen Best Buy and Academy Sports.  This is when I seen something that totally blew my mind.  32 Degrees and people are camped out on the concrete in the wind with INFANTS.  What the hell people?  Are you kidding me?  If you want to go Black Friday shopping that’s cool, if your going to sit out in freezing weather go ahead and expose yourself to that…but an infant?  Really? I don’t even know what else to say…

We hit the Mall, Macy’s was open early…their Black Friday was still too expensive for me.  Whoa…

We decided that since the Mall was warm we would just hang out there until Radio Shack opened at 5:30.  About 5 Am we walked over to Radio Shack and there was a small line.  We waited.  At 5:31 I called the other Radio Shack and was informed that the Mall location was not opening until after 7am.  Really? I stayed calm though, I was shocked by my better than normal attitude about the whole thing.

We left the Mall and drove back over to where we were before to the other Radio Shack.  I went in, grabbed the very last one of what I needed to get (thank you God).  Got inline and waited over 1/2 hour to check out for my item.  Seriously they were setting up cell phone plans.  Surely they could have thought this through and had those people fill out paperwork in one area instead of each register dealing with set ups and tons of questions about packages.  Couldn’t a non register person have handled all the techie questions?  Anyhow, I stayed nice.  We left there and went back across the street to Target.

I walked in grabbed the stuff I wanted and was out in less than 15 min.  I got the last Hello Kitty Nightgown too!  I also didn’t have to wait two hours in the freezing cold for that $5 nightgown!  Score!

We hit a few other places and were home by 8am.  I slept about 2 hours and needed to come and tell you that everyone lived!  I may even do it again next year!

If you were offended by this post then you must be one of the infant freezers!  All I have to say to that is… THIRTY TWO (32) DEGREES!

  3. Oh my gosh, babies? You’re going to subject babies to your insanity? lol Crazy people! Course I think it’s all nuts anyway… I did all my shopping at home online. lol My toddler got to sleep in, haha

I have only done it once (twice? I can’t remember. I guess it didn’t scar me THAT much) and YES here in Denver where it was like 20-something out there were a-holes with infants. WTF. If you can’t get someone to watch your BABY so you can shop, then maybe you just need to stay home.

I went out too!! Pulled an all-nighter and have only slept about 2 hours myself. The lines at Target where we went, were not bad at all when we got there. We stood in line for about in hour and 45 minutes and by that time it had wrapped around the building.

I actually enjoyed it and will probably do it again next year!

  6. luv blk friday shopping but never seen people w/infants camped out thats insane!!

  7. Lee says:

Okay our line at Target was INSANELY long. What made me laugh, was this teenage girl comes out of Old Navy and turns to us and says “Ya’ll, what could possibly so important in Target!!!” even though she was at an Old Navy at 3:00 AM!!! I found it funny.

  8. Who the fuck thinks that having an INFANT out in 32 degree weather for SHOPPING is Ok???

Those parents should be charged with child endangerment.

The last time I went shopping on Black Friday was indeed my last time. My brilliant husband forced took me to get up at the ass crack of dawn when I was 6 1/2 months pregnant to go shopping. He didn’t let me eat breakfast because I woke up late. I was pregnant. I needed sleep. And food.

I ended up throwing up on him.

Now he doesn’t even ask. HEH.

Plus he always ends up having to work at the ass crack of dawn on both Thanksgiving and Black Friday, so the decision isn’t really his anymore. But should he ever ask again, I will remind him of the last fiasco.

Or whip out my c-section scar. Whatever gets the point across better.

PS: I love you, but you’re nuts. Just sayin. :P

  9. I did that last year. I started at Toys R Us at midnight, then came home, slept a few hours, then hit the PX, Kohl’s, Old Navy, and Target.

This year, I woke up around 3am (naturally because I’m an insomniac), I clicked around online, didn’t see anything, and went back to sleep. I checked periodically throughout the day since deals changed through the day at certain times, but that was it. I didn’t even buy anything this year. The Lego set my son wanted wasn’t on sale anywhere any cheaper than what I’ve seen it for already.

  11. I used to work for Best Buy and yes, parents pissed me off making their kids come out in it. Once I saw a kid, probably 7 or 8 drinking a freaking energy drink to stay awake in the line-the line that started at 3pm the day before. People are stupid.

  12. Tori says:

I went to Toys R Us and the line to get in was about 1/2 mile long. Yeah… no thanks. We went to Target on Friday afternoon around 5pm and I grabbed the $3.99 games I wanted and a few dvds. That was the extent of my Black Friday shopping. Oh- and I bought some clothes and a flat iron online… I’m a hardcore shopper like that.

Didn’t do it, have done it in the past before.
Those people with babies outside in the cold were nuts. They’ll be spending money on Dr. visits and medicine for baby and undo any savings they may have gained on Black Friday. Think it through people.

  14. erin says:

I always wondered if people up north camped out like they do here. Here in FL it’s not usually that cold on Black Friday. That said, I went to the movies with DH on Thanksgiving and saw the beginnings of the campers at Best Buy across the street. I think they do it as tradition and fun, more than the “deals” … sometimes. I don’t see any deal worth me not being in bed at night. LOL. I wake up usually around 7 to 8 and head out, look around and I’m home by noon. But nothing I wanted was on sale this year. Big bummer. Still bought some things at Target for DH though.

  15. Kimberly says:

We went as well. They wouldn’t let us touch our stuff at Walmart until midnight so it was 2 before we made it out of there. *sigh* but had a great 12 hour experience (yes you read that correctly). My mom and I shopped for almost 12 hours. I then came home and slept for 20 hours. ROTFL

I scored the Punky Brewster DVD at Target, lol, and can’t wait to give it to my daughter. I sure hope she likes it as much as I think she will.

  16. Lynsey Jones says:

Hahaha, well, congrats on surviving the experience! I used to go every year, but there hasnt been anything I could get THAT excited about to stand in the cold for in years. I think it is more about the experience now than the actual savings. This year I happily sat in my Snuggie with coffee perusing Amazon.com and watched all of my friends updating the craziness on Facebook… it was all the “experience” I needed LOL
