The windows in the living room are not all that great. The couch happens to be right in front of those windows. When we sit down in the evenings to watch TV there is a cold draft just blowing through the windows. Right now there are only blinds up and this does not block out any of the chill coming in through the windows. What I need are some curtains!
I’m thinking about those heavy pleated curtains. I came across some that are insulated thermal blackout curtains. They provide noise reduction, block out light and insulate against heat and cold. This is pretty much what I need. I had thought about making curtains, but honestly..to get all of these benefits it would cost me more to make them than to buy them. They seem to be at a pretty affordable price. I like that Chocolate brown, it would look pretty awesome with our furniture.
There were a lot of other very affordable curtains that I found, but this set provides what I am looking for. There were some others that were more visually pleasing, but this is the set that will deliver the results I need. It should benefit us in both cold and hot weather as well.
What do you do to help keep the drafts out?
I have had to re-caulk all the windows in our house this year. It is a rental and the landlords are nice but never in a hurry to fix things. And having these drafts are killing my electric and gas bills. So I bought some $3 tubes of caulk, borrowed the caulk gun from my dad and went to work. I can really tell the difference. Before you could literally feel the breeze coming in around the window, but not anymore. I am also going to hang a curtain rod at the end of my stairs (we have an ope stair case) to the basement and hang a curtain to try to keep the cold air from the basement from traveling up the stairs. Our basement is for storage and for the kids to play so by blocking it w/ a curtain they can still go back and forth but hopefully it will decrease the amount of cold air come up the steps. I also roll a towel and put infront of the doors to block any cold air from coming in under the door.
We also re-caulked our windows and use little draft dodgers I found at walmart for a few dollars. They work very well too!

Actually I think those kind of drapes would help keep the cold out, and re-caulking helps. Don’t get rid of the blinds though, used along with the drapes I think you’ll have a little better insulation for the winter.
OUr apt living room windows are pretty cold but if I pull the curtains close the temp definitely approves.

Hey girl, we used clear plastic over the windows, in our last place. My mom also did growing up. It works and it filters the light.
