Denton County 4-H Mobilizes Youth for 21st Annual Global Youth Service Day, May 2nd
My daughters are members of Denton County 4H and I wanted to pass on this info to anyone nearby.
On May 2, 2009 the Denton County 4-H Council is calling all citizens of Denton County to assist them with the wrap-up of their 2008 – 2009 Community Service Projects as a part of the 21st Annual Global Youth Service Day program. Millions of youth in the United States and in over 100 countries are planning community service projects and special events to celebrate Youth Service Day.
This group of young people has been working hard all year and is now calling on their community to help out. On Saturday, May 2nd, from 10:00 a.m.-12 noon at the North Texas State Fair Grounds in Denton, 4-H will be on-hand to collect:
- Coupons for Fort Hood
- Pull Tabs
- Birthday in a Box
- Pennies for Progress
- Donations to Relay for Life.
These projects were selected by the youth and represent their passions. The Coupons for Fort Hood supports families of deployed troops and so far our youth have sent over 15,000 coupons. The Pull Tabs supports the Forth Worth Ronald McDonald House. Last year we donated over 40 pounds of tabs. Birthday in a Box is another great project supporting the families of deployed troops. Each kit contains items that help the families make their childrens birthday special while their loved one is away. Pennies for Progress is a simple change collection program that 4-Hers donate back to the 4-H program to support the Texas 4-H Conference Center in Brownwood. Relay for Life celebrates survivorship and raises money for research and programs of your American Cancer Society.
The Denton County 4-H Council was honored to be selected as one of one hundred nationwide recipients of the State Farm Youth Service Day grants. “Youth are volunteering at record rates – more than any other generation in history,” said Steven Culbertson, President and CEO of Youth Service America. GYSD, the largest service event in the world, mobilizes you to identify and address the needs of your communities through Service Learning and Community Service.
